    STOP: C0000218 {Registery File Failure}

    Yesterday until I shut down my HP Pavilion Laptop it was working fine. Laptop has Windows XP Home installed on it. Today morning when I tried tuning it on, instead I received the following error message:

    "STOP: C0000218 {egistery File Failure}
    The registery cannot load the hive (file) :\Systemroot\System32\Config\Software or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable"

    After few seconds, the laptop reboots again and comes to the same error. Process keeps repeating again and again. I have no idea what has went wrong suddenly with this laptop. Do any one of you have any idea regarding this? Please help.

    Re: C0000218 {Registery File Failure}

    It happens with several systems. Here is the solution:

    • Insert your Windows Installation CD and boot the system in recovery console.
    • Click on the first R (for Repair)
    • Follow the instruction (you may need to login as Administrator)
    • Now, you are going to rename the bad registry file and restore a copy from the repair location. Enter the following commands:
    • ren c:\windows\system32\config\software software.bad
    • copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config
  3. Once done, run CHKDSK to check if there is not any problem with the hard drive.
