Kernel Data Inpage Error

I have Windows XP Pro and keep getting a blue screen with the following error.

My screen went blue with the following messages:
Kernel Data Inpage Error
STOP: 0X0000007A (0XC03E15E0, 0X000000E, 0XF8578B0, 0X195FD860)
atapi.sys

base at F8567000
Date Stamp: 41107b4d
something about a dump

I turn off my computer with the power button
I restarted my laptop and got the following error:
System32/hal.dll missing

reboot in safe mode and at the C prompt do a chkdsk
It came back saying something about there being file errors.

boot in Last Known Good Config. It took long times for booting

When I finally got booted up I was trying to empty by IE files but it
crashed again. This time with the following error:
Technical info:
STOP: 0X0000000., 0X82DC0888, 0X82DC09FC, 0X805FA7A8)

I took off my usb 4 way to see if maybe it was causing errors.
I rebooted in last known good config. Still slow. I deleted some files that
had been added that day. started to delete my IE files again and crashed
with the following error:
STOP: C000021a Unknown Hard Error
Laptop screen went blue and monitor screen went black

I unplugged everything from the laptop and had to unplug the pc to turn it
off.
Battery light came on even after I plugged it back in.

Got laptop booted not connect to anything, was in the midst of doing a
defrag and went to blue screen with error:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer

A process thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been
terminated
If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturur for
any window updates you might need.

If problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hard ware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer,
press f8 to select advanced start up options and then select safe mode

Technical inf:
***STOP: 0X000000F4 (0X00000003, 0X83061CA8, 0X83061E1C, 0X805FA7A8)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

I rebooted and did nothing to it, just let it set for awhile, not connected
to anything. The battery light went out after a couple of hours.

Scan computer with Symatec Antivirus, got 3/4 ways through it and laptop
crashed.

Rebooted. Ran Windows updates.

This morning my laptop worked for about 3 hours, finished antivirus scan and
cleaned out all temp files, old files. I have not recently installed any new
hardware or software.

Someone is telling me to reimage my pc, will this help?

Just frustrated and not knowing what to do, HELP!

kernel data inpage error

So, a little history on my computer ... it is now ~4.5years old, and has had the RAM on it replaced about 3 years ago. It is nothing special, it is a 200Gb, 512Mb RAM, <2GHz Compaq desktop. At the end of August I purchased a new monitor and needed to update my video card, and then install a driver to view the widescreen format. Once doing this, the computer started acting up and I ran a recovery with the recovery disk and things were running fine since then. Last week I downloaded BitTorrent and downloaded a few albums and noticed my computer starting to run slow. I attributed this to having left it on for a few days, so I turned it off and the next day I received a blue screen with the kernel_stack_inpage_error. After unsuccessful attempts at a restore, I performed a system recovery. This did not change the outcome, and when I got into Windows none of the settings had changed (seeming like the recovery must not have worked). I had messages of a master boot record error, a corrupt or missing system32\hal.dll, and a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left. I've tried to reinstall XP and it couldn't complete it due to misplacing my product key. I've tried running a dskchk /r and was told that I have one or more unrecoverable problems. I re-ran recovery and nothing has improved any outcomes, this is my latest error message:

kernel_data_inpage_error
0x0000007A (0xE121940c, 0xc000000E, 0xBF8F3A68, 0x1B34A860)
win32k.sys - address BF8F3A6B base at BF800000, datestamp 3b5ee2e6

Can anyone suggest a route to a fix?

It does not help if you start a new thread about the same problem.Whilst there may be a problem with the surface of the hard disk it is
my interpretation that it is something other than this.

Re: kernel data inpage error

well, if you can't repair your
system with the cd, then you
won't be able to re install
the o.s. if you needed to.

perhaps, the product key is
on a sticker somewhere on
the unit.

in any case, you might be able
to recover from the disaster by
booting with the cd and logging
into the repair/recovery console.

then run the commands at the
disk prompt>:

chkdsk
fixmbr
fixboot

then exit and
try again to boot.

however, if you let the
pc on for a few days, i
wouldn't be surprised if
your registry, ie system/config
crashed as well.

incidentally, if you do get
into normal mode i would
initiate a disk cleanup and
then a defrag before anything
else.

Re: kernel data inpage error

when I've tried to run chkdsk before, it just would tell me there are one or more unrecoverable problems ... that really can't be good for me, can it?
I really am most baffled by how I've been able to run the recovery off the disk and that it never seemed to take, even when I was able to log in to Windows before. Does the fact that trying to power up with no disc in the drive leaves me with a blank screen and a flashing cursor, unable to do anything, basically mean my computer is nothing more than a box with power running to it now??

Re: kernel data inpage error

The second paraameter is a significant part of the Stop Error code:
0xC000000E, or STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE: the drive went unavailable,
possibly a bad hard drive, disk array, and/or controller card.
Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228753/en-us

You are welcome to look through the messages in this link where a number
have the same or similar problem. I only went so far but I saw no
solutions.

I am not sure whether you are in a position to do this. If you cannot
you may be able to use the drive manufacturers utility to test the drive
otherwise look at the drive cabling etc.

Try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Re: kernel data inpage error

if the harddrive has errors,
like what you seem to have,
then the computer cannot boot
from it.

on the other hand, the win
cd has data on it and barring
any physical defects with the
plastic cd, it is basically in
perfect condition.

hence the difference between
your corrupted hard disk and
the bootable cd.

if you ran chkdsk and said
there were unrecoverable
errors then this is a good
thing and a bad thing as well.

it is a good thing because it
is affirming that your disk and
file system have been examined
to be corrupted.

but it is a bad thing to know
that there is any corruption
to begin with.

unfortunately, since you
cannot use the cd to repair or
re-install the o.s., you
may have to borrow one
or buy a new o.s.

or you can remove your
harddrive and install it on
a functional computer as
a slave drive and attempt
to perform some maintenance
on the corrupted hard drive.

if in the past, you had not
done on a regular basis
basic maintenance on the
disk and file system, then
what you may have to do
on the corrupted drive is
to remove the trash and
defrag your file system.

who knows, but you may
have simply ran out of
room on your harddisk and
it has 0 free space.

but the above is only one
possibility.

you might want to run a
chkdsk again and use
the /f or /r switch and
observe the results of
the free space you have
on the drive.

Re: kernel data inpage error

Ok, I replied under "quick reply" just a moment ago, but not sure if that's the same ... so I'll try again, just in case.

So last night I was able to get my computer to work for me, I ran chkdsk and it told me that it fixed a number of errors. From there I ran fixmbr, and fixboot (I did this process for both my C: and D:). After this I performed a full system recovery, and was then able to log into Windows. Upon doing so it asked me to install my monitor off its cd, and when I did the entire screen went red. When I ejected the disc and restarted, I was able to get back into Windows. It started automatically updating Windows for me and when doing so I got the kernel_data_inpage_error again. I restarted, and then received a 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\Windows\system32\config\system" message. I rebooted, simply pressed R and it logged it fine. I was able to run a malware scan of my computer and it stayed running for a solid few hours until I went to bed. I am just wanting to know of whether or not there are steps I should follow now that I have regained access to Windows, to fully ensure my system is properly running again (or if and where problems still may lay). I'd heard I should run a defrag on my system now, but I wanted to hear your opinion and suggestions since you've been such tremendous help to me so far. So if you could give me some things to do, or places to check my system out, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: kernel data inpage error

would this apply to my situation concerning the missing/corrupt area of my computer?
and again, any other steps that I should take from here would be greatly appreciated

Re: kernel data inpage error

try running those
disk commands
again but add a
switch to the first one:

chkdsk /r

the above will mark
bad sectors of the
hard drive, which the
o.s. will avoid using them,
that is if there are any
defects on the disk.

then exit and remove
the cd and try to boot
again.

if the above still doesn't
help you to boot up and
you get no error messages,
then the reasonable choice
is to borrow a windows cd
to perform a repair on the
o.s. "or" find the product
key to the cd you have now
"or" buy a new o.s. from the
store.

i have a question:

when you try to boot up
do you see any readouts
from the bios testing of
the ram and disk initializations?

or is the screen simply
blank as soon as you power
up the machine?

Re: kernel data inpage error

I don't have any readouts when I boot up, but if I understand your question, I should be able to switch my setup to give me those (I've just never understood any of that stuff so prefer to see a simple "Compaq" screen). If I get that going, should I try and copy it all down and post them here for you to explain for me?
I'll also try the chkdsk /r tonight when I go home, I'll let you know tomorrow of these things

Re: kernel data inpage error

ok, you don't have
to post anything for
me.

what i am trying to
ascertain is a better
picture of the blank
screen you are getting.

what i was wondering
if the blank screen occurred
immediately after the powering
up of the pc or if the blank
screen appeared after the
memory tests.

however, i may have answered
my own question because if
you are able to boot up with
the cd, then the blank screen
you are getting is the result
of the hard disk and not of
a faulty cmos.

are you still getting the
corrupted hal message?

Re: kernel data inpage error

The blank screen I got was after I would turn the computer on, and after the memory tests ... at that point it just would sit there blank. But after doing the chkdsk /r, and fixmbr, and fixboot for C: and D: it doesn't seem to be happening at all anymore. I have been able to access Windows for the past two times I've sat down at that computer (a feat otherwise impossible the week before), but both times I've received the message about Windows not starting because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\Windows\system32\config\system." I end up pressing R on the reboot, and it will let me in. I have however *knock on wood* stopped receiving any blue screens concerning the kernel_data/stack_inpage_error. So I've improved from not getting anything to work on my computer, to having it work - just not at full potential. That's where we stand now, trying to figure out an action plan to get back to being able to run my computer from power-off to power-on with no glitches in the way.
