Start Menu-shortcuts show "empty"

I have had start-all program issues for a week. It started with some, but
not all of the shortcuts missing from Start-All Programs. A System Restore
in Safe Mode restored the shortcuts. Now, when mousing over them, at least
half show as empty. Quick launch and desktop shortcuts launch the programs
and if I explore C-Program Files, I can find the executable for the programs
and run them.
I'm running XP Home Sp2 all patches and updates. The "empty" shortcuts are
accross the board: Norton, MS, Office, System Tools, adobe, etc.

I had another thread on part of this but the problem is larger than
discussed previously.

TIA

Harmon

Norton Internet Security 2007
Lavasoft AdAware
AVG spyware (formerly Ewido)

Norton runs on a schedule. The others run manually.

BTW in the tips you linked to, a reference to Java recommends removing all
but the most current.. I have manty Javs entries in Add/ remove. Is it safe
to remove all but the most recent? I have JAva set to download updates.

Thanks

How often are you running Lavasoft AdAware and AVG spyware (formerly
Ewido)?

Are you using a Registry Cleaner or accepting offers on the internet to
run this or that to improve system performance? Either can do unexpected
damage!

I cannot answer your question about Java. Whilst it is present on my
computer I conveniently ignore it's existence and encounter no problems.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

1. Antispyware in Norton runs weekly. Lavasoft and AVG (Ewido) about once a
month
2. No registry cleaners or "offers"
3. Before I post logs I need some clarification. In event viewer, I hace
Application, Security,System, and Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has
no entries. The other three have many entries: mostly information, some
warnings, and some errors.

Do you wish to see all available errors and warnings? Shpould I do cold
start first.
Thanks for all your time and help

You really need real time protection against malware / spyware. Does any
of your installed software programmes provide this level of protection?

What are you relying on for a firewall?

For Event Viewer Reports only Errors and Warnings from the Application
and System Logs since the last boot please but check whether any copies
provided also occur in previous session and report so. You often get one
off errors which are not really worth investigation. One of the best
cures to a freeze problem can be simply to close down and restart the
computer. I do not usually investigate reports from the security log but
perhaps you had better include thes on the same basis as for the other
two logs.

I have yet to hear of any reports in the Internet Explorer log. It was
introduced with Internet Explorer 7 for a reason that has never to my
knowledge been revealed. This equally applies to Vista.

Hi Harmon,

Yes, all but the most recent Java may be un-installed. The most up-to-date
version is now JRE 6, Update 2.

AFAIK, Norton offers real time protection. It is also my firewall. Iam also
behind a router.
The programs associated with the empty shortcuts still run and not all
"start-all programs" shortcuts are empty. It appears to be random.
I rebooted into Safe Mood and ran a full scan in Norton, AVG/Ewido/ and
AdAware. Then rebooted. Here are the results from Event Viewer:
