svchost.exe error

Hi. I booted up my computer today, and I keep getting an error message saying
that svchost.exe has encountered an error and needs to shut down. I have
tried every fix I can think of to get this to go away. I scanned my computer
with both AdAware SE and SpyBot Search & Destroy, as well as ran an
Anti-Virus scan with my NIS2006. All of these programs were fully updated
and, other than a few tracking cookies fround by AdAware (since I ran that
first), nothing was found on my computer. The information that has come out
from this is:

Error signature
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 00018fea

The error log that was sent with the error report is 2 files, the txt file
follows:

I did find a fix that referenced those numbers, however it was for Server
2003, and I am not sure how likely that fix would be to work on my XP Pro
with SP2 system. It is rather annoying to keep this Error Reporting window
open, but if I close it, my system does not work. Any ideas?

RE: svchost.exe error

Run services.msc , you probably have some needed service shutting down on
error, or failing to start. That, in turn, might be tied to some failing
device and/or driver.

RE: svchost.exe error

I ran services.msc, and nothing in there has changed since I installed my
Wireless-G card on Friday night. The computer worked fine Friday night and
Saturday, then Sunday evening these errors started popping up. No other
configuration changes were made, to include software installs, etc. Are there
any other ideas that might be able to help me? I posted the dumps and logs
because I figured they would help make troubleshooting this much easier.

svchost.exe error

I had to repair my windows xp and have been in the process of reinstalling
windows xp updates. My problem did not begin until I reinstalled service
pack 2 when I rebooted after it had finished I started getting this error
message:
The instruction at "0x00b12ae1 or l(not sure which) referenced memory at
"0x00000000". After the reboot, I allowed my automatic updates to run and
install 55 updates(mainly security issues). When I rebooted after that I
started getting the generic host error.
I am currently installing the windows xp service pack 3 onto my laptop(Hp
Pavilion zv5000(it doesn't have the amd harddrive it has the intel celeron)).
So if service pack 3 doesn't resolve the svchost.exe and the gerneric host
error where should I go from there?

RE: svchost.exe error

Here are some more errors from windows xp

I am getting an error involving the Microsoft.net Framework

I also got a svchost.exe error right at the windows splash screen before you
get to the login screen.
I also got this svchost.exe after I logged in

The instruction at 0x00cd2ae1 referenced memory 0x00000000. The memory
could not be written.

Then I received another message
Data execution prevention. To help protect your computer windows has closed
this program Generic Host Process for Win32 services.

I am thinking the svchost and Generic Host process are somehow tied together
in the error.

When I am restarting the computer right as it is shutting down I get another
svchost error

Needless to say I installed the Windows XP Service Pack 3 today but the
svchost error was already showing up when I logged in. Now it is showing up
more. Any ideas on where to start resolving this issue.

Re: svchost.exe error

Tami

It was not sensible to install the SP3 update when you had an existing
error!

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Re: svchost.exe error

Hi Tom,

I too am receiving the same error messages as you. I also installed the HP
all in one printer. When I first tried to install my printer I lost my router
connection and messed up my entire configuration and had to hire a tech to
come out and reload my internet connection, Mcafee and the printer, not to
mention get rid of the initial errors. Now whenever I start up my lap top I
receive the errors (in the same order) as you. But the 0x00 numbers at the
beginning are different than yours. I have no idea where to go from here with
this issue. Please let me know if you figre it out.

Thanks
Cathy

svchost error

Svchost, short for service host, is a core Windows system process that handles the processes that are executed from DLLs. Because Svchost provides support to many essential Windows services, there are multiple instances of the executable running at the same time on your system. You must never terminate this program because it is required for secure and stable functioning of your PC. Due to application error, svchost.exe may cease to function and make your system unstable. When the error occurs on your computer, you may receive an error message similar to the one given below:

“svchost.exe – Application Error

The instruction at 0x009a6f9a” referenced memory at “0x00000000″.

The memory could not be “written”.

Click on OK to terminate the program.

Click on Cancel to debug.
Try checking this guide on svchost error if you need more detailed steps.
