| USB Device not recognized
I know people have asked this question before, but I still haven't found an answer and I am in a slightly different situation. I am running a Dell Inspiron 1000 with Windows XP SP2. I purchased a WinTV PVR USB2 about a month ago, and it was working fine. My Dell Printer 720 (also USB) was also working fine. Suddenly, about a week ago I started getting the "USB Device Not Recognized" error. I did not install any updates or patches prior to getting the error message. Device Manager does not show any problems. My USB external hard drive and USB memory stick work just fine (so it's just my WinTV and printer that I'm having problems with). I do not believe that it is my chipset considering that my USB works with storage devices and also that my WinTV and printer use to work. Though I will also admit that I am not too technical. So far I've tried: Unplugging the WinTV and plugging it back in. Uninstalling WinTV (using hcwclear.exe) and reinstalling with the most recent drivers from the Hauppauge web site Contacting Hauppauge (they just told me to update my drivers, which I already did) Uninstalled all of my USB ports so windows can reinstall them Ran usbreg.exe to completely uninstall USB from my registry Reset my BIOS to factory default Updated my BIOS (received update from Dell's web site) Checked on the Microsoft web site to verify that I have the most recent Windows updates Running sf /scan Using Norton GoBack - I went back as far as I could (just a couple of weeks), to no avale. Using System Restore I do not have any other USB devices plugged in. I am hoping that I do not have to reinstall XP. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

| Re: USB Device not recognized
Are all these USB devices using ports on the motherboard or a hub? If you disconnect the USB memory stick and connect the printer does it then work? -- Cari (MS-MVP) Printing & Imaging In Loving Memory of our dear friend Alex Nichol MVP |

| Re: USB Device not recognized
I had similar problems with a Hauppauge TV-USB device. It seems that Hauppauge is destroying some MS USB components. It happens when Hauppauge is plugged in a certain USB-port and later in a different one. Everything you do to have that Hauppauge unit back is in vain. At the same time some other USB devices are not working as well. I uninstalled all USB MS components and bought a Hercules TV-USB unit, no problems anymore! Hauppauge is in the dustbin now, where it belongs! |

Use the Device Manager to scan for new hardware. Follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type: Devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK. 3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. (This causes Windows to recognize new devices) 4. Close Device Manager and Control Panel. Also, make sure Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is installed. Did you download and install the iPod software? http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ |

| Re: USB Device not recognized
I had the same problem with an older memorex mp3 player. The trick is all in the order which you connect things to the usb port. For instance when I first connected the mp3 player to my computer it gave the infamous "usb device not recognized". Well I thought about it then tried again, the problem was the order in which I connected stuff, the first time around I connected the mp3 player first THEN connected it to the USB port, this didn't work. The second time around I connected the USB port first THEN the player (make sure the player is on), this time it worked, so you might want to experiment with the order of connection. If it still doesn't work, you might need to get a PCI USB adapter card, USB connectors built into the motherboard are not that reliable. Hopefully this helps John G. |

| usb device not recognized
My usb devices have worked just fine, but just recently they stopped. It was about the same time i updated for windows. I have gone to the device manager, and looked for any yellow or red in the list, and there was nothing. when i plug in my mp3 player, it is still able to get charged, but i am not able to access it on my computer to add or remove songs. Nothing else has changed. I also tried to uninstall the xp update (1 of 8 updates) only, and there was no change. There were other updates but none are directed to the OS. I think the other are to office 2003. Any help would be helpful. |

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root Hub device(s), Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again automatically. |

For some reason the earliest system restore was from may 9th at 2pm. The problems started the night before. I don't know why there aren't any more system restore points. I have had this computer for about a year. |

| USB Device Not Recognized
I have this "Error" message, that continues to pop up every 10 to 15 seconds: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognice it." It then gives the location of the device as USB Root Hub (2 ports) and shows one unused port and one Unknown Device. The problem is, there is nothing plugged in to that port. It is on the rear of the tower and I checked. There is a secondary USB, also on the rear, that I use for the mouse, Keyboard and printer. There are two front USB ports, that are not used at all. I have attempted to uninstall this mystery device, but after approximately 15 seconds, the same error message pops up. I would be happy, with just the ability to turn off this anoying message, but have not been able to figure out a way. Is there something in the registry settings or elsewhere that would quiet this error, or permanently fix it? -- :-) |

| RE: USB Device Not Recognized
I'm having the same problem. I talked to Dell Warranty support and we reinstalled my operating system (windows xp) - no luck. (It seems like I can make the error message appear by touching the area to the left of my mousepad (on the surface of my laptop) with my left wrist!). I've spent over 10 hrs on the phone with Dell tech support and the error message is driving me nuts. Any ideas? |

| Re: usb device not recognized
My problem is pretty same with yours, but with a difference. My usb ports work well for my mouse or usb HDD, but when it comes to my drawing tablet(Hanvon) it says usb device not recognized... I've checked drawing tablet on another computer and it works just fine. Have no idea what's going on... :-( I'm using laptop(Toshiba satellite 300d). Before there were no such a problem, it's just started recently. I've tried : Reinstall drivers. Delete USB drivers in Device manager and reboot. Left my laptop without a power supply(including battery) for about 30 min Reinstall windows (which windows XP SP 3) All that didn't work... Help me please. |

| Re: usb device not recognized
HAd the same problem on my Dell laptop. Just 3wks after the 1yr warranty expired. They wanted $60 just for me to talk or chat with someone about it. Instead I surfed for answers in tech forums like this AND FOUND THE ANSWER!!! Believe it or not -- just unplug the computer and remove the battery. Don't know the technical mumbo-jumbo as to why, but basically the USB ports are still mechanically fine, their brains just got messed up. Pulling the plug on them requires them to reset and Walah!! They all work again. Hope this helps some others. No need to re-install any operating systems or pay a technician to take a peak. |
