    CAPTURE DEVICE NOT DETECTED

I am using a JVC GR-D271U (digital video camera).
My video is recorded on a tape in the camcorder, and I'm trying to tranfer
it to my PC using Windows Movie Maker. I have only a USB cord, and when I try
to capture the video from the device, Windows Movie Maker says

"A video capture device was not detected. Verify that a device is turned on
and connected properly, and then try again."

I made sure both sides of the USB were plugged in and the video camera was
turned on, but I'm still not able to put the video on my PC.

You need a Firewire cable. The USB cable is used mostly for transferring
    pictures.

I am having the same problem (see my post "Captured video is grainy" 4/29/07)
and have installed an IEEE 1394 card and am using a firewire cable. I still
get the error message. Maybe someone can help both of us?

    Thanks!

Did you check Device Manager to make sure there isn't a problem with the
    card?
Did you check the manufacturers website for an updated driver?

Also you could try a different cable if you or a friend have another one to
make sure the cable isn't the problem. Even new cables can be defective from
    time to time.

    Re: CAPTURE DEVICE NOT DETECTED

I checked Panasonic.com and the driver update says it won't work with my
computer system (?) and could not complete. The manual for the dv camera
says that "...it being OHCI compliant should have no problem working with any
OHCI compliant firewire card/video-editing software package." The card I
installed and the new cable I have are firewire. It IS ok for a 4pin
connector on the camcorder side and a 6pin connector to the IEEE1394, right?

I just don't get it! Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

I have the same problem with a canon HV10 on my windows XP. It runs great on
my Vista system w/same firewire cable. Canon says it should run on XP w/WMM.
Driver seems OK no new ones at HP. WMM for XP is quite different then on
    Vista.
