Control Panel, Display, Desktop "not responding"

When I try to use the desktop tab in the Display section of Control Panel, it
does not respond. All of the other tabs function properly. I'm stymied. I can
change the desktop image by right clicking on a new one but I can not select
how the image is to be displayed, i.e. centered, tiled, stretch. The only way
to get out of it is to "X" out. When I do that, Windows sends an error
report: You chose to end the nonresponsive program, Run a DLL as an App.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi

    If you type

    desk.cpl

from Start/Run does the Display Properties screen appear?

Yes, no problem at all getting the "Display Properties" screen appear. All
the other tabs work *except* Desktop. When I click on that tab it just
freezes and eventually shows (not responding). At that point I have to "x"
    out to close the screen.

Click Start- Run and run these commands one-by-one :
    regSvr32 /i shimGvw.dll
    regSvr32 /i msHtml.dll

    regSvr32 /i shell32.dll

See if there is a copy of that file in the windows\system32\dllcache folder.
If so, copy/paste it to the windows\system32 folder. It may have become
    corrupted somehow.

I am having a similar problem, when i click on properties, and click on the Display tab, it closes the whole window. When i type in the cmd desk.cpl nothing happens. Sometimes i get the error about rundll as an app other times nothing happens...i've reinstalled windows (not formatted the drive - just repair) but nothing works...I'm out of options and getting so frustrated. Which operating system have you installed and what is your computer specifications? If a System Restore does not help, you might give this hotfix Resolution a try even though it says it is for the Nero InCD program. People have reported that it has worked for them. Check icons are missing from Control Panel, or you cannot start Control Panel, the Welcome Center, or games in Windows Vista article from here.
