WMM automatically closing and creating error messages

I have been happily using Windows Movie Maker (2.1) for week without a
problem. But now, for no reason I can see, it is not working. Every time I
open the program it stalls just after loading the collection clips and I get
the "Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close"
messages. I would really appreciate any advice you have , as I am working on
a deadline for a project! Incase the datails of the errr log help, I have
copied them below

Error signature
AppName: moviemk.exe AppVer: 2.1.4026.0 ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.2600.2180 Offset: 0001b2af

And the error log file says:

Re: WMM automatically closing and creating error messages

Have you installed any new programs or
updates since the last time MM worked
correctly?

Maybe it would be worth a try to do a
System Restore to a time before the
issue began.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I too, like sallyb9 has been using Windows Movie Maker for quite some time,
but now for no reason I can see, every time I open it I get, €œWindows Movie
Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close€. I also would like
advice. I have followed the recommendations given to sallyb9, but they do not
apply. I have also checked on €œpapajohn€problem solving. I have done the
following. I have reinstalled using %systemroot%\inf finding moviemk etc. I
have also checked the acceleration, which appears to be fine. I am open for
suggestions.

Re: WMM automatically closing and creating error messages

I have been having this same problem, after editing and before adding to
storyboard. I have noticed something, however; since I cannot uninstall from
the control panel, I tried moving the entire program file to the recycle bin
to see what would happen if I reinstalled, but it won't let me do that. It
tells me that the Movie Maker is in use by another program. Rebooting doesn't
change this.

I have been to PapaJohn's site and renamed a couple of problem codecs, but
that didn't help. This is a persistent problem; it happens every time i use
the program. It's very frustrating.

Re: WMM automatically closing and creating error messages

Movie Maker 2.1 cannot be uninstalled/reinstalled conventionally because it
is not a standalone program but instead part of the SP2 upgrade.

You can reinstall SP2 over itself to see if that works at the following
link:

Another option, and one I recommend regardless of this issue as long as you
plan to continue using Windows XP is to have Microsoft send you a disk with
SP2 and all the latest updates. The reason for this, if your XP installation
didn't come with SP2 to begin with, is so that you can install SP2 and the
updates during an XP reinstall before ever connecting to the internet. You
can request a disk at this link:

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

Often times when WMM crashes immediately upon open (and it isn't an IE7
issue) it is because the program is trying to open the last project it
worked with and that project is corrupt. Try moving your projects to a
different directory or renaming them then opening WMM to see if that was the
problem. Otherwise see Papajohn's website. (Crashes & Hangs) for the most
comprehensive list of potential reasons:

WMM is my favorite program too and started having problems after downloading
IE7. Removing it and returning to IE6, WMM back in business

Re: WMM automatically closing and creating error messages

I've had the same problem many times now. If you see a white box in the upper left corner, but he screen does not go completely white, it is still running. If you wait a minute or two, it will be revived and you can get back to buisness.

If you see a white box in the upper left corner, and the screen does go completely white, it is not responding. If it does not respond, don't freak out. Just close the program and send an error report, and they'll try to make it better. If you open WindowsMovie Maker again, it will detect your previous project file, and you can click "yes" in the message bar, and before you know it, you can get back to your project!

Hope this helps! ;)
