Windows Firewall will not start

I have posted about this before....

Windows firewall will not start. When you try to start it manually
through services.msc you get this error...

"Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS) service on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is denied."

Someone posted a link to a MSKB article that did not help.

I tried to uninstall the firewall using this command

"sc delete Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS)"

and I get this error

"[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

I have tried "sfc /scannow" and it runs its course, but does not help.

I tried to run SP2 to reinstall it, and it errors out. (I forgot the
exact error, but it doesn't finish.)

I read somewhere most windows problems can be fixed without a
reload... I am hoping this is one of them.

Re: Windows Firewall will not start

Just a note,

If you have Windows live one care installed,
It takes the place of Windows XP fire wall and disables it.

However it now protects both incoming and outgoing mail

Try this:
Open a run command and type:
netsh winsock reset click [OK] athen Reboot your machine.
After rebooting open the Run command again and type:
firewall.cpl click [OK] and see if you will get the control panel for the
Firewall.
If not try this open the run command again and type:
services.msc click [OK] on the services window be sure windows firewall is
started Automatically by clicking on Properties while Highlighting the
Service.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Re: Windows Firewall will not start

I do have the firewall set in services to automatic.

I have also run the winsock reset.

When I go to run firewall.cpl, it tells me the firewall is not
started, and do I want to start it. When I say yes to start, it gives
me the same error as before.

Re: Windows Firewall will not start

I went to the first website, and did the reg file and the reset.
Nothing..

I did the second thing, which was run

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132
%windir%\inf\netrass.inf

then reboot, and then run the reset.... it worked... so far..... It
seems Windows firewall is running again...

All that hassle to just go in and shut it off!!

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Windows Firewall will not start

I have to update...

The firewall only ran for a few minutes before it shut itself down
again. When I tried to restart it, I got the same error.

I ran the same thing over again, and it would only let the firewall
run for a few minutes.

I went to the next page listed, and that royally borked my system. I
couldn't maintain a network connection for longer than a minute before
the Network Connections service would stop. I could restart the
service, but then it would just shut off in a minute or so.

I ended up just reinstalling XP Pro. I was fighting other issues as
well. (Video wouldn't display out of the compostie video out, etc).

But thank you for your help anyway.
