Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

After connecting to the Internet within 5 to 30 minutes I get a Generic Host
Process for Win32 error. After that I receive 'svchost.exe' error message
stating

"The instruction at "0x77c43dbd" referenced memory at "0x786f5138". The
memory could not be "written".

If I try to close either of the boxes out I get knocked off the Internet and
have to restart my computer to get back on. If I try to get back on without
restarting I get a message stating that my moden is is use or not working
properly. I have checked my modem, run my anti virus and spyware programs,
ran an on-line virus scan and do not know what else to do.

I have Windows XP with the Service Pack 1 on my computer.

Thank you for help!!!!

Are you on dialup or high speed internet? If high speed, is it cable or dsl?
Are you using a router?

Hi,

I still have dial up and I'm not sure if I am using a router, I don't know
exactly what that is. If you have any suggestions I would appriciate it.

RE: Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

If I had to make a guess without looking at the PC, you may have yourself a
virus. A lot of them are constantly trying to do things on the internet, and
when they get a connection, they start downloading other trojan programs,
popups, and the like.

The first thing you should do is get yourself some up to date virus
protection and run a scan.

The second thing you should do, if its available in your area, is get
yourself some high speed internet access. You'll never go back to dialup.

The local phone company usually has a deal you can get with DSL to where its
plus or minus $10 the same price as dialup.

RE: Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

Error may be coming from Automatic Updates. Try this...

svchost.exe - Application Error (in module msi.dll)
The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
If you have a svchost error and/or Generic Host error occur at startup, here is the fix

Stop the “Automatic Update” service

Rename folder c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SD.old

Reregister dlls

REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Restart the “Automatic Update” service

Re: Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

Is there some place that I can find more detail about how to do all of this?
I am somewhat computer literate but am not that famaliar with how to
reregister the dll files that you are talking about or ever where to find
them.

Thanks!!

how to register DLLs

click Start button, click on Run. Type in each line
REGSVR32 name.DLL (where name is each DLL name) and click OK

Hey dude. I have this problem too. Connection is DSL. The Generic Host Process error comes up randomly, from 1 minute to hours after I reboot. I do NOT have Automatic Updates Service even enabled so it can't be this. Do you have any other ideas?

Other details: My connection manager says I am still connected to the internet after the error occurs, although, all my internet applications lose connection and cannot regain. I am also unable to disconnect. I click the icon, and disconnect is available, but it does nothing. I click on 'status' and it flashes on the screen for like a milisecond and goes away. I cannot connect to internet unless I reboot. This is very annoying. Please help.

Re: Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

First, thanks for the response. I cannot rename the folder
SoftwareDistribution as it tells me that the folder is in use or is read
only. When I try to change it to not be read only it won't stay that way.
If I leave Auto Updates off, the problem goes away but then I am not getting
the updates for Windows XP. Any other thoughts??

Thanks.

Same problem here

I get that same error, I have three computers all with AVG anti-virus on them and I've also run several different spyware apps with only minor items found like cookies. My laptop hard drive died a while ago so I put a brand new one in it, installed XP sp2 and AVG then used it to get online via dialup and within 2 minutes I had that generic host process error. Shortly after it showed up I lost connectivity. The phone like was still tied up but I couldn't ping at all. With my other computers it also kills all network processes including the remote desktop app that I run to access and control the other computer on the network. When I clicked send error report a Microslush website came up telling me I need to download security updates, normally I have automatic updates off, but I eventually gave up and tried to get the updates I needed. Of course this was a daunting task as I have to be online to get them and downloading anything via dialup is sloooooow thus I'd get the error long before the downloads completed (stupid Microslush) When I did finally get the updates that Microslush said I needed and installed them it didn't fix the problem at all. So even Microslush doesn't know what's causing it... (Typical). Anywho, I'm getting cable internet this Saturday, but I use the internet for online college courses and this constantly needing to restart is beyond retarded. I have my dialup shared via another computer on the network so that I only have to restart that computer not the one I'm doing schoolwork on. Hopefully I don't have the same problem when my cable is connected because the error completely annihilates ALL network connections.

I suspect that the error shows up when someone calls, we get a lot of soliciation calls during the course of the day and this might explain why the error is random. I've unchecked the call waiting box thinking that might help but I still get the error.

If anyone wants to waste a few minutes of their lives on reading what microslush has to say about this error, check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894391
