| Norton Ghost 2003 LiveUpdate Discontinued?
Evidently Ghost 2003 needs build 793 for robust support of external USB drives. However, Systemworks 2003 LiveUpdate reports all components up to date when Ghost is at build 775 (as installed from the CD). Running LiveUpdate repeatedly, as suggested, does not help. Ghost 2003 has been "discontinued" by Symantec, but would they have shut down LiveUpdate, thus depriving all of the latest working version? And, indeed, build 775 does not work with an external USB drive in an attempted cloning operation. It hangs. I see that others have reported problems updating Ghost 203 recently, but someone at Symantec Live Chat claims LiveUpdate should work -- although their website has a cryptic page that says that "Files and Updates" for Ghost 2003 are no longer available. I imagine this could be catastrophic for people who have backup Ghost images and have lost their updated Ghost installations or boot disks. Does anyone know more about this? |

After you download and unzip the 793 file, just copy and paste all the files from it into your ghost folder. Let it overwrite the old files. Then you will be up to build 793. |

Many thanks, that's great. Ghost is now at build 793. Will be trying the disk cloning again after the weekend. bud wrote: > <cvt7@yahoo.com> wrote in message > news:1157096414.996742.69410@b28g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... > > Evidently Ghost 2003 needs build 793 for robust support of external > > USB drives. | Re: Norton Ghost 2003 LiveUpdate Discontinued?
Well it wasn't so simple after all... Symantec updates must be done sequentially (i.e. each update they have released must be done, not just the last one). But the first of the two updates linked above (for build 789) does not seem to exist at that site. Applying only the 793 update did not result in a working boot disk. I also wonder if one can duplicate the effect of a LiveUpdate session by just copying files to a single directory. Some of the files Ghost puts on its boot disk seem to come not from the Ghost directory under Program Files, but from the one under Application Data. One file that comes from there is ASPIECHI.SYS, and Symantec (and other websites) say that early versions of this file cause USB access to fail. (The 793 directory update from Princeton did note contain that file). However, even if after downloading this file from Symantec (not the easiest thing to find by the way), the boot disk hangs. So it seems that (a) you cannot skip the 789 update, and (b) it is probably not enough to update files in the Program Files Ghost directory only. If it's true that Symantec has killed Ghost 2003 LiveUpdate, anyone trying to install it from CD on a new computer will have no USB functionality (IMO). Needless to say, no more Symantec products for me. bud wrote: > <cvt7@yahoo.com> wrote in message > news:1157096414.996742.69410@b28g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... > > Evidently Ghost 2003 needs build 793 for robust support of external > > USB drives. Thanks again, bud. That link worked. However I still had no luck with Ghost/USB for some reason. I uninstalled the old Ghost and installed a fresh one, and then I added the files from the two update directories, then created a new boot disk -- but on reboot, that hangs again (though it displays a later version and date). Finally I downloaded the evaluation copy of Acronis True Image, and after a couple of clicks I cloned my hard drive via USB and installed the new one.in my computer. It was completely straightforward Your help was much appreciated though. bud wrote: > <cvt7@yahoo.com> wrote in message > news:1157174094.436974.81100@h48g2000cwc.googlegroups.com... > > Well it wasn't so simple after all...
