XP has drivers for optical drives (CD and DVD) built in.

What is the error code you are getting when you uninstall and reboot the PC?

Did you reinstall your DVD decoding software?

Wow this took a lot of research...... (talk about an almost invisible site... I finally got a clue from
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=85414 so I'll definitely give them the credit for the assistance)

You might also want to run the DVD decoder checkup utility from Microsoft so
you can tell if it's really installed correctly.

Re: drivers for LTD-166S DVD-ROM

You might want to redownload drivers for your soundcard or soundchip
(whichever you have)
