| XP hangs after welcome screen
Hi, Anyone have any ideas why Windows XP hangs after I type in my logon password at the "Welcome" screen. Just after I type in the password the computer hangs before the start-up sound is played, maybe 5 or 6 times out of 10. I am running a legitimate copy of Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop with 1GB memory. I have recently run Norton WinDoctor, DiskDoctor and Antivirus. The only think that seems to be a problem is a missing file for Microsoft's ..NET framework 2.0 called "mscvr80.dll" is missing, I don't even know what this does let alone whether it is relevant to my problem. Any help much appreciated. |

| Re: XP hangs after welcome screen
Some suggestions. Try them in order listed. Disable automatic restart on system failure. Just to see if you can get a STOP code, or if you can login to Safe mode, then it's possible you can restart the system in normal mode later on. When the pc is booting up (after the BIOS has done its POST test and before Windows starts loading), Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap & keep repeat tapping F8 ! You will actually see "Disable automatic restart on system failure" as an option . Select that and give it a try. This option is available if you have XP service pack 2. Once restart on failure is disabled, you may get a STOP error with text --- at the next Windows startup. Write it all down, and then start searching for the final solution. And post back here with the STOP code & text. B) If no stop code, and still unable to login to Safe mode, reboot pc, repeat the F8 tap, select the option with "VGA mode". See if you can login. If still unable to get into any mode...... Last, C) I'd do F-8 Function-key selective bootup and try hard to select Last Known Good. When the pc is booting up (after the BIOS has done its POST test and before Windows starts loading), Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap & keep repeat tapping F8 ! Best of luck. Do post back here with details. |

Thanks for your response. I was able to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" without getting an error code. So far I have been able to log into Windows normally on 3 occasions with no problem. I will be monitoring the situation over the next couple of days. Thanks for your help and advice. |

Keep this handy. See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in eventvwr.msc<enter> -- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer. Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred. Double click---the information "may" give a clue. |

Well I checked the Event Viewer but the events didn't go back far enough to the last time my computer froze after typing in the login password. I will check that out again the next time if and when the problem occurs. Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred. Double click---the information "may" give a clue. |

| XP SP2 hangs at Welcome Screen.
As I have bit similarity the issue posted here, I thought you can shed some light on my issue too. Here is the details. I have a Dell latitude CSxH model, and one day when my friend was playing a game it got restarted and from then it gets hanged at welcome screen. So I have formatted and installed fresh windows XP sp2 and now I am able to login to windows in safe mode but not in normal mode, if I try to login through normal mode the system gets hanged at welcome screen. I have checked the device manager and I see an error on my ethernet controller, is this causing the problem? and in eventvwr it says RPC call failed. Even I suspect some boot virus in my system as it is laptop tell me options how to delete boot virus without removing hard disk. Awaiting for your reply |

| Re: XP hangs after welcome screen
I had a similar issue whereby after locking the screen and subsequently trying to unlock it, I would only get the wallpaper for 60 seconds. Mouse pointer would move but no right-click, no icons, no taskbar. After banging my head against the wall for about a half hour I remembered that yesterday I had changed the "Tb2 Launch" (Timbuk2) service setting from Automatic/Started to Manual/(off). Starting it up again immediately resolved the issue. So, if you have Timbuk2 installed, check the status of the Tb2 Launch service, turn it on and set it to start Automatically if it is not set that way. Here's how: Under a login with Admin privileges, right-click My Computer and select Manage. Under the Services and Applications tree select Services, and then look for the Tb2 Launch service in the list on the right. Double click it to open the properties box, and make the change there. I had the same issue on another computer several months ago but it took a while to remember this very simple solution. Good luck, and let me know if this works! JR |

Start your own post next time - why'd you hijack someone elses? Have you ran full CHKDSKs and followed that up with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility scans to ensure the hard disk drives are okay? Have you checked your memory for errors with some software to test the memory for hours upon hours? How's the temperature in the room? In the computer case? |

| Re: XP hangs after welcome screen
it might be that the logon screen is showing up. sometimes you can try and press the alt ctrl del keys or perhaps the esc key or a alt tab key. if none of the above reveals anything, then you should reboot and immediately after the bios tests the hardware, press and hold down the f8 key to review the status of your o.s. in safe modes. |

| Re: XP hangs after welcome screen
My Windows XP was also hanging after welcome screen, it was after fresh windows installation. I am using dell, once I installed windows, I also installed drivers like VGA, Network and sound etc. This was the activity which I performed after windows installation so when I removed network/lan driver by going to safe mode and restarted to normal mode the hanging problem got resolved. I will now download fresh copy of driver for lan from dell. |
