epson scanner driver won't install

Epson Scan won't install from CD or from Epson website for my Perfection 2480
scanner onto computer with XP Home. I get mesage "could not copy files. Check
setup disk then run setup again." I click OK, and another message "an error
occurred during startup. Restart your computer and run setup again".
Installs ok on another computer with Win98SE.

Boot with your scanner connected. Now XP's plug&play feature should come
up with a balloon that new hardware was found and will either install or ask
you to insert the installation disk. That's all. :~)

OK, this is not quite the entire problem. Getting the driver on board is one thing but the problem is installing the scanner program and not just the driver. does that make any sense.

Did you go into Control Panel > Scanners and delete all that out? Sometime
they will not reinstall if there are bits and pieces laying around.
I know the printer won't. I found that out the hard way. Paying Epson
Support to tell me to delete the printer program out.

I was having the same problem and here's how I solved it:

First I rebooted after the failed install *with the scanner unplugged*, then I deleted the %rootdrive%:\WINDOWS\twain_32 directory. In fact I deleted all Epson-related directories (I found an "Epson" one under \Program Files, possibly from an earlier installation - I've tried 3 different installation packages).

Then I went into the registry and deleted all keys with "Epson" in them (I did export all of them first - there were 7, not counting references to the files in MRU lists).

The above steps may not have been necessary, but I had the strong impression that there were pieces of the failed installation floating around. You may well be able to skip the registry part, and maybe deleting the directories.

*_Then_* (now we get to the meat - if you skipped the above steps, make sure you've rebooted *with the scanner unplugged*). The install file, epson11374.exe (the name of yours may vary), is a WinZip self-extracting executable. I installed WinZip (you can get it and use it on a trial basis - an old version will do - I have version 8) and drag-dropped the exe file onto the window. WinZip opens it with no problem. Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice (not in a temp folder). Close WinZip. *Don't run the setup.exe.* Instead, plug in the scanner and click through the "Found New Hardware" dialogs and tell it to install the driver from the folder you just unzipped the installation files to. Let it finish installing.

*Now* if you open an acquisition program (I use IrfanView) it'll find Epson Scan and open it (you may have
to choose a TWAIN source first).

If you want to run Epson Scan as a standalone program, go to the %rootdrive%:\WINDOWS\twain_32\escndv folder and run escndv.exe. Epson Scan should run. It worked for me!

I had a similar problem. Epson Artisan 835. Windows XP SP3. "COULD NOT FIND THE FILES TO INSTALL THE SCANNER DRIVER". From Epson's support site. This is a FILE EXTRACTION problem. They use WINZIP to extract and install their software. I solved my problem using EXPRESS ZIP to extract and install "SCANNER DRIVER and EPSON SCAN UTILITY v3.772" this must be done first....Then download and install "DRIVERS and UTILITIES COMBO PACKAGE " WINZIP is used for this....All will work fine...Hope this info helps someone.
