can't get xp to boot after fix via recovery console

I am looking to get Windows XP to boot. The original issue was with a corrupt ntoskrnl.exe. After checking the MS KB314477 article, it showed me the solution to expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32 and it said that the file was successfully expanded. But after that I am getting stuck in infinite loop. It will give some error that "We are sorry for the inconvenience..." and then tell me to start windows normally, last known good configuration, or some other safe mode options. After picking anyone of this, I again get the same screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried to install from Windows XP CD, just boot to XP CD and then choose recovery and then press enter for password and then type: CHKDSK C: /R. After that is done then type Exit and then let windows xp to start.

You can try to run Chkdsk and see any report that is generated that will give you any hint. You can try to boot from your XP installation CD and then press a key to boot from CD when prompted. After that select the second option by pressing R at the first screen. Now you have to choose the number for the appropriate folder on you hard drive, typically you press "1" for C:\WINDOWS. When prompted for a password press enter (for a blank p/w) should work. When C:\WINDOWS is displayed type the following:
chkdsk /r

Incase you are getting the problem after upgrading to Service Pack 2 then you can follow the steps given in the below link:

Can you try to boot to the Recovery Console on the CD (hit R when asked to) you can run the BOOTCFG /REBUILD command to have Windows automatically rebuild your boot.ini file for you.
