Blue Screen of Death

First problem was “Missing or corrupt.....hal.dll”, fixed with help from you
guys & gals, thanks. Second problem “Missing or corrupt.....ntfs.sys”, as
above.

Now windows will "start" to start (you know what I mean :) ) and I get the
infamous Blue screen, the error is: STOP 0x00000071 {0x0000000, 0x00000000,
0x0000000, 0x00000000} SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED.

I have tried several times to start windows in Safe Mode with no luck, a
whole lot of commands (or something to that effect) come up on the screen
(which I’m assuming is normal) it stops on “system32/drivers/agp.440.sys”
then after a while the blue screen comes up, does that mean anything or is it
just normal for Safe Mode? Should other files come up?

I’m using XP Home, SP2, OEM (Dell) CD.

I'm looking at this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887359/en-us

Question 1: Do I change “Winnt” to “windows” and does “$ntuninstallq811493$”
have a different name in XP Home? Would trying $xpuninstallq811493$ damage my
computer?

Question 2: Would copying the ntoskrnl from my CD be a good idea?

“If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.”

Question 3: Could this be fixed by accessing my current BIOs or up-dating
them? Can that be done through the Recovery Console?

Question 4: Is there any other possible changes that may need to be made to
the procedure in article 887359 to get it to work with XP, any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated, I’ll do anything to get my data back, well
almost.

When windows starts to load the moving light was blue before this happen,
but it's now lime-green (top right windows icon colour). I did notice back
when SP2 came out and I downloaded & installed it that the moving light went
from red or may yellow to blue.

Question: Could a possible solution be to install the Service pack(s) again,
is that possible through the Recovery Console?

Re: Blue Screen of Death

Mount your disc in another NT type computer (or use a Bart PE or Linux
live disc) and salvage your files. Then format that mess that you have
and reinstall Windows. Format the disc NTFS right from the begining,
don't use FAT32 & convert.exe.

Re: Blue Screen of Death

Thanks for that I'll get a Linux live disc off a work mate and I'll format my
HDD as NTFS. I was think of doing a Repair Install, but what I've read having
a OEM copy of win XP will mean I'll loose most or all of my data.

Have you added RAM memory recently?

How many memory sticks are installed?

Re: Blue Screen of Death

I have not added memory recently, but I have noticed something at startup
when i turn off quick boot.

It says

Memory Testing: 2096128K OK (Installed Memory:2097152K)

Am I having a memory failure?

Re: Blue Screen of Death

Nick

I have noticed a number of reports in Google involving Stop Error
messages having the same characteristics as yours and no certain
solutions. The common charactistics Stop : 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, the
second parameter matching the address of Win32k.sys and the naming of
Win32k.sys. A lot of suspicion has been directed at memory and some
have suspected graphics cards. I found a further dialog considering dual
core processors. Since late last week I have encountered several users
with this error. Many Stop errors are caused by a problematic driver but
this does not seem to be the case with this error.

You might try removing one memory stick and seeing if the error still
occurs and then swapping it for the other and repeating the process.

You might test your RAM memory

Re: Blue Screen of Death

Ok I have a question about that Memtest program. Is it possible to run it
without a floppy drive? Because i Dont have one installed at the current
moment.

And also I have a new blue screen of death appearing

RE: Blue Screen of Death

Memory sticks are irrelivant. You nVidia driver is messed up. Uninstall the
driver and reinstall it from the nVidia website. That should solve the
problem. And microsoft wont be too much help, you may want to talk to the
computer manufacturer, they should be able to remotely fix it themselves.
But the problem is with the nVidia video program, not your memory.

Re: Blue screen of death

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.
