"Reboot and Select proper boot device....." NO HARD DRIVE IN SETUP

When I turned on my computer then I got a black screen with the below message:
"Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

When I went in Bios then there was no hard drive listed under channel devices? The CD/DVD drives are listed properly. I was running Windows XP SP3. Can anyone please help. Thanks

You might be having a bad hard drive or it could be also possible that it is just a bad or loose data cable. You might have to reseat it again and try if it works.

So, after disconnecting the cable from the motherboard socket, the little thing broke off. So, I was not able to reconnect it. Now, if I am turning the computer on, then nothing happens at all, there is no power. What have I done wrong?
