| WinXP can no longer write to CD/DVD drive
This post is rather long but contains as much detail as I could muster to help fix my problem. The WindowsHelp and Ttroubleshooter were both useless. Thank you for your assistance. Problem: WinXP SP3 (Windows Media player, HP Software and Norton Backup that worked perfectly untill something broke), can no longer write to DVD/CD Drive, (ASUS DRW-1814BLT). Inserting previously written discs, all are readable. However, After re-installing NERO 7, full functionality returned WITHIN Nero, but "My Computer", Windows Madia Player, Norton Backup etc. still cannot WRITE to blank discs. Cannot even copy a .txt file to a writable disc. Loading a blank Memorex CD-R or Memorex DVD-R, (both worked previously from the same stacks of blanks). In My Computer DVD/CD drive D: displays 0 bytes available and 0 bytes used. From within My Computer, attempt to create a new folder generates error: "Unable to create the folder 'New Folder'' File System Error (16389). R-click D:\ - Properties - General displays File System RAW. Used Space 0 Bytes Free Space 0 Bytes, 9same report on any disc tried). Go to "Hardware" Tab displays; Standard CD/ROM Drives; Location: Location 0 (0). Device Status: Device is working properly. Under Properties Radio button, same info as noted above plus Device is "Enabled". The Device Manager DVD/CD Properties reports the same info, but under under the DETAILS tab, there seems to be missing configuration data in a few of the catagories, ie..Under "Compayable Ids, The only entry is Gen CDROM. Service = cdrom. I have updated the ASUS driver via flash and updated the rest of the software drivers drivers that write to the drive. I have deleted the DVD/CD drive in Device Manager and edited the Registry DATA fields as noted below. Below that, I have exported the Associated Registry key sub-tree that follows.. Recommended Registry Edit from ASUS Tech Supt forum; 8:12 PM 2/12/2010 [Start] [Run] [Regedit] Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters] Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values. Exit Registry and Reboot Coppied Registry Data sub-tree for Drive D:. | Re: WinXP can no longer write to CD/DVD drive
Hi Daniel, I have a similar problem (running XP/Server 2003, SP2), which I believe was caused by installing 3rd party iso image writers- particularly a copy of MagicDisc that I downloaded. I saw an identical solution on another forum of deleting all data for the UpperFilters and LowerFilters under the location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. In my case, UpperFilters and LowerFilters names do not exist in the above location. They do exist, however, in the location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\CdRomTEAC_CD-W54E____________________________1.1B____\5&b3cc5de&0&0.0.0 Do you have any info on what would happen if I deleted the data for UpperFilters and LowerFilters in this location? Data values here are: LowerFilters: imapi UpperFilters: redbook I am experiencing the problem with an internal writeable CD drive, an internal DVD-ROM drive, and an external USB DVD-RAM drive. These were working fine until I installed the 3rd party image writing software programs. Note: I also went through the Control Panel Device Manager deleting drivers, scanning for new devices, etc. These things did not work. Let me know if you need more info about my system. I've just recently begun working with the registry, so not sure what info will help to diagnose the problem. Thanks! Matt |
