How to connect my Win7 laptop to my networked Canon printer connected to a WinXP desktop???

I have a simple problem. I just purchased a new laptop computer with
Windows 7 64-bit (incidentally, I love Win7) and would like to use it
to print to my existing Canon i860 networked printer that is connected
to my desktop system which is running Windows XP Pro. Windows 7 finds
the shared printer just fine but tells me that there is no compatable
driver. How do I remedy this?

I have downloaded the new Windows 7 i860 64-bit driver from Canon and
installed it on my Win7 laptop - no help. Canon does not have an
updated WinXP printer driver that would talk to Win7. Win7 does give
me the chance to search for a driver but I don't know where to point
it.

This question is a blend of WinXP and Win7 so I posted it here. If
there is a better group to post this to, please direct me.

Sounds like out of luck .

Make the printer shared on the XP machine and load drivers on the Win 7
machine and add the printer. The Xp machine and the printer have to both
be on for it to work.

Thanx Joe - tried that this morning with no luck. However, if I hook
up the i860 directly to the laptop, the drivers load fine and it
works.

Here is what I was told to do:
The Windows 7 printer driver for your i860 printer is provided by Microsoft
as part of Windows 7 and Windows Update and includes all the necessary files.

To install the printer, connect the printer directly to the computer, and
then power the printer on. Windows 7 will detect the printer, and The driver
will be installed automatically as long as there is an Internet connection.

If you are having an issue with the printer being detected, you may try
disconnecting the USB cable, then the power cord from the printer and
shutting down your computer for 30 seconds. Restart the computer to the
Desktop, connect the printer cable and power on the printer to let Windows
detect and install the printer.

Once the printer connection is established with a direct USB connection,
reconnect the unit to it's original computer and perform the following on
each printer to associate a network port to the devices:

1. Open the Devices and Printers window from the Control Panel. In the
Printers window, right-click the printer icon and select 'Printer Properties'.

2. Click the 'Ports' tab, then click 'Add Port'

3. Select 'Local Port' then click the 'New port' button.

4. Enter the port name using the Host name and printer name in the form
"\\Computer Name\Printer Name" (without quotations) and then click 'OK'.
The Port name window will close.

a. To obtain the computer name, go to the Host computer, right click on
the 'My Computer' window and choose 'Properties'.

b. Click on the 'Computer Name' tab, make note of what is entered in
the 'Full Computer Name' field.

c. To find the printer name, go to the Windows XP server/host computer.
Enter the 'Printers and Faxes window in the control panel.

d. Right click on the shared printer and choose 'Properties'. Go to
the 'Sharing' tab and make note of the 'Share Name'.

e. Example: The Computers name is "WindowsXP", and the printers name
is "MP830". The port name will be = \\WindowsXP\i860

5. Click 'Close' on the Printer Ports window .

6. The new port will now show as being selected. Click 'Close'.

7. Click 'Install driver' if the following window appears. You are now ready
to print.

I'm having the same issue, and this suggestion did not help. FWIW, I have two
printers on my XP system, a Canon i860 and a Canon MP830. I have NO troubles
networking to the MP830 from my Windows 7 laptop, but I have found no
combination that allows my Windows 7 laptop to connect to the networked i860.
Note, also, that I have no trouble directly printing to the i860 if I plug
the USB cable into my Windows 7 laptop.

This is a Windows XP group. Why are you asking here about a Windows 7
issue?
