| KB 831374 and Windows XP SP3
Hello, I ran chkdsk /r after reboot on my laptop running Windows XP SP3 and I can see the following report in the Event Viewer under Winlogon source as follows. Event Type: Information Event Source: Winlogon Event Category: None Event ID: 1001 Date: 10/20/2009 Time: 12:58:57 AM User: N/A Computer: E65H Description: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive. Cleaning up 601 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9. Cleaning up 601 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9. Cleaning up 601 unused security descriptors. CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)... File data verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5)... Free space verification is complete. CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the master file table (MFT) bitmap. Windows has made corrections to the file system. 244187968 KB total disk space. 40687080 KB in 125917 files. 44128 KB in 18226 indexes. 0 KB in bad sectors. 219008 KB in use by the system. 65536 KB occupied by the log file. 203237752 KB available on disk. 4096 bytes in each allocation unit. 61046992 total allocation units on disk. 50809438 allocation units available on disk. Internal Info: 60 36 02 00 19 33 02 00 d3 36 03 00 00 00 00 00 `6...3...6...... e2 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 5b 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........[....... da 8d 55 0b 00 00 00 00 0e ff c8 42 00 00 00 00 ..U........B.... 80 85 b5 0d 00 00 00 00 a6 87 ae 5c 03 00 00 00 ...........\.... d2 5b 3b 10 09 00 00 00 b2 4d 50 d0 0c 00 00 00 .[;......MP..... 99 9e 36 00 00 00 00 00 98 38 07 00 dd eb 01 00 ..6......8...... 00 00 00 00 00 a0 57 b3 09 00 00 00 32 47 00 00 ......W.....2G.. Windows has finished checking your disk. Please wait while your computer restarts. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. My result is similar to the description of KB 831374 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831374/en-us. There is a hotfix available on the KB page but it is only for Windows Server 2003. My installation of Windows XP is fully updated with SP3 and all the subsequent updates through Microsoft Update, and yet this is the result of chkdsk. Looks like chkdsk messed up some of the ACLs on the file system although I have not experienced any adverse effects so far (I do regular back-ups nightly for important data). My system is a Dell Latitude E6500 with 4 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD running Windows XP SP3 fully updated. Any thoughts or suggestions? |

Hi "Surya Halim", No, your result does NOT indicate the problem described in KB831374, which deals with a situation where the MFT (Master File Table) is larger than 4GB or if there are more than 4,194,303 files on the volume. The example report on that page had: 4,232,266 files, (which is greater than 4,194,303.) Your report showed: 125,917 files > There is a hotfix available on the KB page but it is only for Windows > Server 2003. My installation of Windows XP is fully updated with SP3 and > all the subsequent updates through Microsoft Update, and yet this is the > result of chkdsk. Looks like chkdsk messed up some of the ACLs on the > file system although I have not experienced any adverse effects so far > (I do regular back-ups nightly for important data). That article may apply to: * Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition * Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86) * Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86) * Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition * Microsoft Windows XP Professional <=== * Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition <=== The fix for Windows XP is the latest service pack. SP3 is the latest. You don't have that problem. Your Chkdsk reports indicates success. > My system is a Dell Latitude E6500 with 4 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD running > Windows XP SP3 fully updated. Any thoughts or suggestions? If you think you are experiencing some sort of security related problem, please include details of any observations or error codes. Otherwise... (Triple-click here, to be of good cheer. :) --Richard |
