Windows XP restarts when I try to shut down my computer

I have desktop computer with Windows XP, SP3. Some days ago the following problem appeared: when I try to shut down my computer, the computer restarts instead of shutting down.

I have read an article by Microsoft about problems caused by Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 or Direct CD 5.0, but I do not have these programs. I have also tried to unmark "automatically restart" when there is an error in sysdm.cpl.

When I bought the computer, two years ago, I had the same problem and in the shop where I bought it they changed the power supply to solve the problem. Do you think the problem my be again caused by the power supply?

sounds like something you can
fix / adjust in the bios.

there are settings in the bios
that will wake up the computer
if it detects a telephone ring,
or a signal from the internet,
etc....

the key word above is "wake on.."
and "power management" in the
bios.

I have checked everything in the Power Menu of the Bios and everything seems right...

In safe mode the system also reboots. So it seems that the problem is in the power supply; I will change it.

I have replaced the power supply with no success. The problem persists!

Re: Windows XP restarts when I try to shut down my computer

then it could be your powersupply going bad.

what you might try is to see if you can successfully
power down from a safe mode.

if not and the system reboots then put your computer
in standby or hibernation and turn off the surge protector.

this should gaurantee to turn off your pc.

------------

I almost forgot another way to turn off pc is by holding in
the power button for about 10 seconds.

then release when pc is off.

another method is that the power supply has an on/off
switch located behind the pc.

so if you can put your pc in standby or hibernation, flip
that switch to off.

Re: Windows XP restarts when I try to shut down my computer

if you switched out the p.s.
and you checked the power
configurations of windows
and you checked out the bios,

then perhaps the power switch
is bad or the mobo is shorted.

perhaps, you need to upgrade
your bios.

check out your mother boards
website to find clues regarding
the bios version you have and
whats available and

perhaps troubleshooting the
problem you are experiencing.

perhaps, your lan board is
faulty or the settings for its
driver are set up to wake
the pc up.

Does it do a complete reboot? Any updates ready to be installed? Are you
configured to auto update?

Re: Windows XP restarts when I try to shut down my computer

Thank you. The computer does a complete reboot exactly as if I had clicked on the Reboot/Restart button instead of the Shut down button. There are no updates to be installed.

In any case, finally I could verify that the problem is in the motherboard and not in Windows. I could verify this because I have taken out the hard disk and I have installed another hard disk with a completely new installation of Windows XP: the problem was not solved. Since I had already changed the power supply and updated and checked the BIOS, I think the only possible cause should be in the motherboard. For this reason I have sent a mail request to the "ASUSTek Customer Service Center".
