MS09-044 (KB958470) RDC display issue after installing?

We are currently testing the August patch release from Microsoft before
releasing to production via WSUS. We have noticed one issue right away with
the install of KB958470 (MS09-044).

After the patch is installed and making a remote desktop connection to a
Windows 2003 server, the re are grid-like articfacts displayed on the START
menu. Also, when opening applications like IE, Front Page, etc there are
vertical and horizontal lines appearing. This doesn't happen when connecting
to a Windows 2000 server strangely enough.

Once the patch is uninstalled, the problem goes away. We are testing on ~20
systems and about half of the users have reported this issue.

- All users are on Dell Latitude notebooks (D630, D430, E4300).
- Updating to the latest display driver from Dell does not resolve the
issue.
- Setting the desktop display to 16-bit does not have any affect.
- This does not appear to affect XP systems with RDC 6.0 or 6.1 installed
which get a different patch - kb956744

Has anyone experienced similar with this patch? Appreciate any feedback.

we have experienced the same problem with IBM Thinkcentre S50 machines
after this patch was deployed to them.

And have you contacted MS about it?

Same issue here when connecting from our XP Pro SP2 machines to our Server
2008 machine's running RDP v5.1. So far no issue's when connecting to Server
2003.

I did contact Microsoft and opened up a support case regarding the issue.
Because of the time it will be tomorrow before I receive a call-back.

Speaking with Microsoft, they are suggesting that XP SP3 be installed which
contains v6 of the RDP client. Or you can manually download and install the
latest RDP client which resolved our issue.

This was the first time they have made aware of this issue so no word on any
other fixes or workarounds at this moment in time.

I spent a whole day trying to solve this and the installation of
Remote Desktop 6.x fixed it without removing the KB958470 patch.

P.S. I never would have got it fixed if it had not been for this
thread. Thanks to all !!!!!

Thought you should know...I had the same problem and narrowed it down to this
patch. I use a Dell Vostro 1500 with XP Home and my wireless Remote
Connection is on a Dell 8300 with XP Pro. Are there any negative
ramifications by not reinstalling this patch?

I have been searching all over google for answer to this and I didn't
have a clue as to how to describe it and why there were no hits ..
until today.
I had been searching under RDP grid - or squares or graphic or
annoying

I installed the upgrade to RDP client and all those nasty artifacts
went away.

I hope it is not too late for my eyesight!
