Intermittent folder freezes, explorer

I have XP PRO SP3 on a T60 with 2GB RAM.

Recently I started getting these strange folder problems where if I open more than two folders deep from my desktop or external hard drives all the menus in the status bar would be gone and just have the windows logo in its place. Furthermore, I can't right click on any items in the folder and sometimes can't access any further folders.

I've uploaded a sample of what the folder looks like when the problem occurs here:

This problem goes away every time I restart my laptop, but comes back eventually within an hour. I figure it's explorer.exe, but I'm not sure how to correct it. Has anyone else experienced this and knows how to fix this?

Does the problem arise when you access folders on an internal drive as
well as a folder on an external fplder?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Yes, the problem I described above happens when I access folders on internal drives as well as external drives.

My laptop has Classpnp.sys ver.5.1.2600.5512.

I have neither Win 2000 Server or x64, but just the pre-installed 32-bit edition. My son frequently plugs his external drive onto my laptop and 'pulls' the cord out instead of safely removing it whenever he finishes, he has been doing that long before this problem began, which could explain why I have EVENT ID 57.

After reading the Microsoft article you provided, I can say that this problem does occur frequently whenever I insert an external hard disk iinto the USB port.
