| chkdsk; Ran on restart, deleted a System32 file
I put my computer to sleep, went away for an hour, and came back. Upon coming out of sleep mode, it told me that one of the files in system32 was corrupt, and that I needed to run chkdsk. I tried to run chkdsk utility, and it told me that it couldn't (citing no reason), and asked if I wanted to schedule it to run after a restart. I told it to do so, then restarted my computer. While checking for corrupted files, it found the file, and removed it. Completely. Didn't fix it, didn't tell me to put in a disk so I could replace it, just removed it. So now my computer can't boot into XP, no matter what I try. I would just completely reinstall, but I left the XP-Home disc at my parents' house. Is there anything at all I can do here? To reiterate: chkdsk deleted a file from system32, so now my computer can't boot XP. EDIT: I retried the boot, this time turning off the automatic restart, and got this message on a bluescreen: Stop: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component} This application has failed to start because KERNEL32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Last edited by Genereaver : 28-04-2009 at 03:13 AM. Reason: More information. |

You will need your XP cd then you can perform a "repair install" Google for exact instuctions if needed |

How lucky do you feel? If you don't have your Windows disks, you might try to boot from a Live Linux CD such as Knoppix. If you can get a copy of the file you are missing from another Windows machine with similar version, you might be able to put the file back from a thumb drive and reboot. No guarantees, though. At a minimum, you can use the Knoppix disk to back up your data files to a USB drive or over the network in case you need to start anew... Knoppix |

I actually ended up downloading a thing that lets me put stuff in. Unfortunately, it looks like kernel23.dll is modified as you use your computer, so when I put it in the computer decided that I need to reauthenticate Windows. Since I have neither the CD nor the necessary code, that's not happening. Looks like it is. I went back in, deleted the one I added, and grabbed the copy from the folder 'dllcache'. Used that instead, and now everything works just fine. Thanks for all your help! |

Bummer. Now that I look, I see that my kernel.dll file has a modify date of about a week ago. I wonder if that is one of the files that is backed up in a System Restore point? -- John |
