| DNS cache doesn't work after SP3 install
Hello, Ever since I installed SP3 on a Dell computer, internet browsing is sluggish. Today I discovered that the DNS cache doesn't seem to work. If I ping google.com, it will take 5+ seconds to return an address and send the request, which is more or less normal. Subsequent requests also take 5+ seconds, which isn't normal. If I ping the ip address, I get immediate replies. I displayed the DNS cache, which showed the correct entry for google.com. I also flushed the DNS cache and tried all again, no change. I also tried alternative DNS servers (openDNS), no change. So, it seems that the DNS server is working, and it is caching, but the cache is not being read. Also, the hosts file is being ignored. I put a bogus entry for google.com in the hosts file, and I was still taken to google.com (after the 5+ second delay, of course). Any suggestion? Thanks |

Only the second one will have an effect on my computer. -- John |

Info such as: Version of XP (Home, Pro or Media) Name of Antivirus protection Type of Internet access Router make / model, if any used Wireless or wired connection, if using router (see above.) With these "infos" added to this thread, someone might be able to guide you to a more complete solution. |
