| Disk read error ctrl+alt+del short of reinstalling XP pro will do the trick. I can access all data by booting off my d: drive but when I use my regular c: drive I get this message after the startup self test passes the screen: searching boot record from iede 0 ok disk read error occured press cntrl+alt+del to restart I do not have a boot disk or xp install cd and my restore backup was not backing me up. So I have no restore point. Does it sound like the MBR? This is about my limit on computers. I am asking friends if they have an XP install cd so I can try the recovery console. Am I on the right track thinking the master boot record is corrupted? Plz feel free to ask any and all questions as this has been going on a week or so. HELP! Thanks in advance, Bruce |

yeah, you're on the right track for borrowing a cd from someone. in the interim, you might want to double check your bios/cmos settings and ensure that disk 0 is being seen/acknowledged by your motherboard. -- db·´¯`·...¸><)))º> DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @hotmail.com "share the nirvana" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > "bcramer1" <bcramer1@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:DC3E538C-0EBD-4D18-9F3D-A60C6E0F7F6B@microsoft.com... > I read for 2 weeks all the other answers to fix this and it seems nothing > short of reinstalling XP pro will do the trick. | Re: Disk read error ctrl+alt+del If I go back and change the bios to start with the 0 drive instead of the 1 drive it then gives me the error message. So I assume it is acknowledging the 0 drive at that point. I have 3 Dell XP install cds but they dont seem to do me any good. I need the Microsoft version of XP I believe. yeah. what you might try is to switch the boot back to the working drive. then via that functional o.s. run a chkdsk on the disfunctional drive, via the cmd console. click on start>run>cmd then see if any errors can be found and fixed and perhaps will make it bootable again. ------------- also, there are some freewares on the net you might try like this one I found the other day. I haven't tested it or found a need to try it out - but may be of some value to you: http://www.free-av.com/en/products/index.html -------------- the funny thing is that microsoft provides the method to create bootable floppies for emergencies and tools. maybe you can download them onto a cd and maybe use the utilites that are included. -- db·´¯`·...¸><)))º> DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @hotmail.com "share the nirvana" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > "bcramer1" <bcramer1@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1A73E505-98C6-422D-B14E-EB5EDF756C63@microsoft.com... > > If I go back and change the bios to start with the 0 drive instead > of the 1 drive it then gives me the error message. Ok, I will try that. I did find an XP install cd so I can get the recovery console. Did run chkdsk and nothing was found. Can I overwrite XP onto C drive with out losing data? I know I am asking alot!
