Windows Explorer [not IE] "not responding

I use Windows explorer to rearrange files, access files, etc. For about the
last 3 months I have been getting a "not responding message" either at the
time I open the program or if I go down several levels to get to a file. I
tried using "My Documents" but get the same message.

My files consist of pictures, document files, and several databases [one
from MS Word and 2 genealogy]. Other than microsoft updates [automatically]
there is nothing new on my computer. I can give you the whole set up but do
not think you need it.

I am running XP Pro on a 3Ghz pentium 4 machine w/1GB ram. I have a 250GB
hard drive with almost half unused.

There are no other problems with the computer; I feel it is adequately
protected with a firewall, real-time virus checker and a lot of other
precautions and I run several scans weekly.

I am NOT a techie; I am hoping this is something simple.

thanks

try seeing if the issue
also exists in safe mode
and also in safe mode with
networking.
