What is "the BIOS thing"?

To prevent your computer from restarting: Start your computer and
immediately start tapping on the F8 key. When the Windows Advanced
Options menu appears, select Safe Mode. After your computer boots into
Safe Mode, go to Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and
Recovery Settings button > remove check mark from 'Automatically
restart' > restart your computer.

When your computer restarts it will halt at a blue colored screen. Near
the bottom of the screen is the number (starts with 0x000..) and name
(LOOKS_LIKE_THIS) of the error that is stopping your computer.

Repost with the number and name of the error and include the version of
Windows you are using (including the service pack.)

If you haven't got a disk, then you have no files to reinstall WinXP with -
no files, no disk = no reinstall.

Not necessarily. His information could be stored on another partition. A lot
of newer computers do not come with discs.. instead they might say hit F10
(or something else) to get into restore options.

Are you supposed to have disks? Or is all the information kept instead
in a hidden partition on the hard drive? If that's the case, you'll
have instructions somewhere that tell you how to start the reinstall
using the ondisk programs. So it depends on how the computer was sold
to you; with disks or on the hard drive recovery programs.
You have to know that first; check the paperwork that came with the
computer. Then you can go from there.
If whoever sold you the computer did not provide the disks, then they
either did something illegal, or you misunderstood and did not buy the
operating system and need to buy a copy of your own. This is usually
the situation with a personal sale. Stores are more apt to do it
properly.

Twayne

Using the repair partition is not quite as useful as it seems. These
things merely restore the computer to the "as delivered" state. You still
have a lot of work to get the computer back to the state that it was in
before the crash.

A much better way is to create the type of repair partition that ATI
furnishes. It will at least get you back to the state that computer was in
at the time of the last backup.

Re: How do you reinstall or format Windows xp without using a disk?

Yes true Shawn, there are computers with recovery partitions etc but the OP
said "without using a disk" so that was what I was really answering.

I assumed the OP didn't have a disk, didn't have a recovery partition
(basically nothing).

If the OP has a recovery partition, then they would need to consult the
manufacturer's site or the user manual regarding restoring the computer to
the original state.
