Windows update installer 3.1 fails - 0x80070005

WinXP SP2
Dell Inspirion

While attempting to run windows upate, It says it requires software update.
It downloads and attepmts to run windows installer 3.1. It fails with error
code 0x8007005.

I googled it and ran MGAdiagnostics (came up clean and valid). I also ran
regcure to clean up a very messy registry.

I had to restorew/repair WinXP SP2. Internet and other access is now
working.

How can I clear the install of installer 3.1?

I downloaded and ran and got error - access is denied. WHat configuration
changes must I make?

Leroy,

Iwas able to find another solution. This system was a "repair" rebuild of
Win XP Home. There are issues with that, that require working with DLL
(rename & restore).

It is now working.
