| Notification tray icons won't stay hidden
Regardless of RtClick>Properties>Customize, those #^$&@! icons keep re-appearing. The worst offenders are the two network connectors, though this laptop is always wireless. Is there a utility that will fix this? Thanks, Lon |

You didn't say which icons you are talking about and we can't guess. Have you contacted the vendor(s) of the software that is placing these icons in the tray? --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est Lon wrote: > Regardless of RtClick>Properties>Customize, those #^$&@! icons keep > re-appearing. > > The worst offenders are the two network connectors, though this laptop > is always wireless. > > Is there a utility that will fix this? > > Thanks, > > Lon |

This will hide icons that are set to be hidden when inactive. Notice how the display changes when you check and uncheck this box. You can enable or disable to clock here also - some people don't know that. Choose Customize. Single click any item under Current Items and then set the desired behavior. Be sure to Apply everything. You can always change things back later. Some things will have a property box in their configuration to display an icon or not while it is running. Right click the icon of interest in your taskbar and look through the settings and properties to see if you can just turn it off completely, or maybe just hide it when inactive. Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes you have to look for it, sometimes there is no option (check the manufacturer WWW site maybe). This is not the same as hide when inactive. The network icon is one that you can choose to not display at all, or only show it when it is connected. You change those properties in the network connection properties itself. The network one is the only one I have always displayed all the time (except the clock), the rest of mine are either turned off completely through their properties or hidden but I can expand the list out to the left to display and manipulate the hidden ones if I want. After a hide when inactive item goes inactive for a short time, it will slide away and hide again. |

No luck. Did you check the individual property options for the icons by right clicking them (like I said)? Lets look at your Volume icon as an example. I do not have a Volume icon because I disabled it in my Settings, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices settings. If I enable it again, the icon shows up instantly. There is a checkbox that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar". If it is checked and applied, you will have the icon. If you uncheck it and apply it, the icon should go away. At least that is the way mine works. If I right click the Volume icon in the tray and choose Adjust Audio Properties, I get the same screen as if I chose it from the Windows Control Panel. You can change back and forth and watch the icon appear and disappear. You can make the clock go away as I described earlier. Can you turn your clock display on and off and make it stick? That falls into the very basic configuration category. Networking connection icons are similar to the Volume icon. If you right click the network icon, choose Open Network Connections, right click your wireless network connection, choose Properties, there is a checkbox to display the icon or not display the icon. I only have one wireless network connection to worry about. Mine is always displayed, but that is the way I want it. You should try to figure out the Toshiba stuff yourself using the same ideas. You may not be able to permanently disable the display of some of the icons. Those you hide. Be sure the Hide inactive icons box is checked like I said before. If it is not checked, they will always be displayed. It is not easy to make some of them go 100% away, but you turn most of them off through their individual properties and hide the ones you can't turn off completely. Be sure to read, understand and follow all the instructions that come with your responses. It is no ritual. It is taking your time and figuring it out. If these things do not work then you need to work on it a little more. Maybe you can find some other computer that works the way you want and see how it is set up. |

As far as I know, you cannot fix this. I have the opposite problem, an icon that I want always there, but which magically reverts to "hide when idle" after a while. I've even looked into writing my own utility to update the registry on a periodic basis, to put them back as I want them, but the pointers to the icons are in some bizarre binary format that I can't be bothered to decipher. -- Steve Swift http://www.swiftys.org.uk/swifty.html http://www.ringers.org.uk |

To remove the network icons from the 'Notification Area' you'll have to disable the network cards in "Device Manager". ju.c "Swifty" <Steve.J.Swift@gmail.com> wrote in message news:#j7FQO9lJHA.4252@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Lon wrote: >> Regardless of RtClick>Properties>Customize, those #^$&@! icons keep >> re-appearing. >> >> The worst offenders are the two network connectors, though this laptop >> is always wireless. >> >> Is there a utility that will fix this? > > As far as I know, you cannot fix this. Here are the two best free Tray Icon managers. They can hide icons and restore them after an explorer crash. I use 'TrayManager 2.0 (PCMag)' and it works excellent, haven't tried 'Tray Wizard' though.
