windows won't boot OxOOOOOOED

hi

after a power cut in my house my xp(home edition) desktop stopped working,
now when i try to boot it up i get the blue screen error

OxOOOOOOED (Ox8A71O9OO, OXCOOOOOO6, OXOOOOOOOO, OXOOOOOOOO)

I can't load windows in any of the safe modes

i've read something about changing the BIOS
or inserting the windows cd to boot and using the recovery console.
i don't know much about computers so am unsure what to try, i also am worried that doing one of the above will wipe my hard drive.

i feel i am in over my head and could really use some help

used my windows cd to boot by going to the recovery console and running "chkdsk /p" it's all explained better in the link
