Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Hi .
A few days ago i noticed that double-clicking on *jpg files , it doesn't open the Win Pic & Fax viewer , instead appears the notification that Windows doesn't recognize this kind of file. You all know this error notifications , it lets you choose to open from yhe list of programs or access the web . I chose the list , chose Win pic & fax to view the *jpg files and to be the default program , press ok . Somehow this action had no effect . All my pictures continues to be unrecogniseble . Only if i right-click on a picture and choose preview it openes with Win pic & fax , but the file remain unknown by default.

I use Win XP Pro .

Work computer? Ask your IT guys.

Home computer? Your security software may be interfering with your
ability to set file associations. Try disabling your security software,
make the change, then re-enable security. Better now?

I think your problem is with file associations. Check out the XP help
to read about it. Start > Help and Support and make the subject:
file associations

If you navigate to a file and then right click it, you can manually
pick a program to open the file from a list of installed programs or
pick one of your choice. That will work for that moment.

If you right click the file and then choose Properties you can change
the Opens With application to whatever you want and Windows Pic & Fax
is available for you to choose. You can also see what Windows wants
to use.

If you change the properties and the Apply the change, all files with
that extension (in your case .jpg) will then use the program you
specified from then on. They are now associated. This is usually a
good thing.

Before you change the associated program, it would be interesting to
know what it is trying to use before you changed it and how it got
changed.

Has this ever worked before and then just quit working without some
intervention?

I don't use Notepad or Wordpad for text tiles (.txt), I like the free
Textpad. I made the change once as described and I am all set!

I guess I failed to ask the right questions.

If you open a folder with files in it, right click any .jpf file (try
one that is not working), on the General tab, what does the Opens
with: value say?

Your answer is:

What is the Type of file: value for a .jpg file?

Your answer is:

If the Opens with: value for a File type of .jpg does not say Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer and you then choose to Change... it to Windows
Picture and Fax viewer and Apply the change, does the change get made
or not? What was it before you changed it?

Did the change get made? (Y/N)

Did the Type of file value change? (Y/N)

Describe what happened.

What was the Opens with value for .jpg files before you changed it?:
If you choose another file and come back to a .jpg file, is the Opens
with value now correct?: (Y/N) Describe what happened.

If you choose to view the file(s) in the folder with the detail option
(View > Details) you should see the Type column. What does the Type
column say for .jpg files? It needs to say JPEG Image.

Your answer is:

Describe the contents of the Type column for the .jpg file that does
not open properly.

Do other files (like text files) open with the proper application? (Y/
N)
Do .txt files open properly if you double click them? (Y/N)
What are the properties and contents of the Type column for .txt
files?

There are more complicated ways to do this, but try the easy ones
first.

It's says Open with : unknown application

Type of file: Jpg file

No. As i said , the file type remained as before (*jpg file) , same as Open with : unknown application

When i right-click on a *jpg file , select Proprieties > Change Open with ... > choose Windows Picture and Fax Viewer > select Always use the selected program to open this kind of file > Apply > Ok -- that specific file opens with Win pic & fax , but it doesn't apply on all *jpg files , and what is more strange is that even this *jpg file wich i opened with Win pic & fax doesn't change it's Proprieties !!

No. I described it earlier.

It says JPG file.
I have to mention that ONLY *jpg and *gif files are not opened by the Win pic & fax , the *BMP files are opened normaly

Try it this way: Right-click a jpg, click "Open With", "Choose Program",
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", select "Always use the selected
program to open this kind of file", click OK.

When I tried it the way you had listed, the select "Always use the
selected program to open this kind of file" option wasn't available
(grayed out). That's possibly because Irfanview is my default program
for such operations and may have it locked in in the registry.

The old Always use the selected program check box option, eh? Would
you believe.

I did not notice this since mine is always checked and grayed out so I
can't change it. I don't know if it has always been checked like that
or it just got that way. I can't uncheck it with my moose even if I
wanted to, but I don't want to.

I tried changing the program be choosing another and browsing to
another to see what would happen. The program will change and stick,
but still the check box is permanently checked.

If I did want to change it, there is something to manipulate and
enable/disable it in the registry.

What say you, cesar7891?
