    File name too long - cant delete

    I am having a 160GB hard drive in my Windows XP running desktop pc. It is about 10 months old pc containing various unwanted files and folders, hence I decided to cleanup and get some storage space. So I deleted many files from all partitions. Usually I do Shift + delete and did the same this time as well.

    After deleting files my recycle bin icon was showing that there are some files in it, but when I opened there were no files. So I right clicked the recycle icon and click on Empty recyce, but here it game me and error saying :

    Cannot delete (name) the file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different name.

    I rebooted my system and tried doing again but yet the same error. Any help what should I do ?

    I think you should repair your recycle bin. You can do this by these steps;

    Go to Start > Run and type CMD
    Type following and press Enter

    attrib -s -h %SystemDrive%\RECYCLER

    And

    rmdir /s /q %SystemDrive%\RECYCLER

    Press enter after entering each command.
    Restart the system.

    Nope. Really got my hopes up with the cmd thing. No success.

    My situation may be different. The hard drive with the problem ("undeletable") file is an external hard drive. I.e. it has no operating system. The drive with the Recycle Bin I modified has an XP SP OS.

    Moving on...

    You can download a software called Delete Files Permanently that enables you to permanent delete files and wipe free space without any chance of recovery. Delete Files Permanently is file shredder software that securely and permanently delete all unwanted files forever. You can delete files and folders with one simple click! Just select files or folders you want to delete and press 'Delete permanently' button.
