| USB controller malfunction?
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP. I cannot install any new USB devices. The software and hardware appear to load OK but then the Install New Hardware Wizard says it can't find the software. Have tried installing USB 2.0 PCI card in case that was the problem, but can't install this either - same error. Any clues/solutions? |

Did you install the driver on the CD that came with your PCI card? -- JS http://www.pagestart.com "JudyH" <JudyH@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9465AC30-B608-4C48-A493-4E5FDD641466@microsoft.com... >I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP. Yes, of course I installed the driver with the PCI card. And with a mouse. And with a webcam. But my computer still 'can't find the software'. the pci cards usually don't have drivers... they are plug and play and use drivers that xp and vista already have, they give a CD but that is for windows 98- Me "JS" <@> wrote in message news:Oc5EJ1PcJHA.1184@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Did you install the driver on the CD that came with your PCI card? > > -- > JS > http://www.pagestart.com > > > "JudyH" <JudyH@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:9465AC30-B608-4C48-A493-4E5FDD641466@microsoft.com... >>I have a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP. Judy... can you describe the exact hardware you are trying to install in the USB ? This is probably not a problem with your USB ports.. So lets locate the real problem... Yeah, I know, but 'it' asked for the CD. Plus, this isn't just happening with the PCI card. It also happened with a MicroSoft webcam (but a Logitech managed to limp onboard somehow) AND a plain old optical USB mouse. | Re: USB controller malfunction? Can get to browse, yes, from dialogue box, or via Device Manager to things like 'update drivers' etc. but it still 'can't find the software'. Pointing to Windows\System32, for instance, still yields same response. Is this likely to be a device conflict? Hardware fault? Something screwed up in the Registry thru trying to install MicroSoft webcam????? As soon as I plug any new device into one of the USB ports, XP recognizes almost instantly that something new has happened and I can take it from there. Usually not having to do much of anything except follow the directions. Does XP even notice you plugged the new device in? What is your new USB device? Is it really new or is it just new to you? Do you believe it is undamaged? Have you contacted the manufacturer or checked their WWW page? Have you tried plugging your device into another Windows computer that doesn't already know about it yet to see what happens? Do any of your USB devices work? Did your working USB devices stop working after you installed XP? The 3000 has been for several years. Have these USB ports ever worked? If you are up and running and unplug or plug in a USB device that you know works, does Windows notice that or is it just your new device having the problem? Where is that link on how to post a message... This is as bad as the "Existing User Not Found!" message I got earlier today from somewhere else. |

| Re: USB controller malfunction?
Hi Judy, Hi Community I have a similar problem on a XP Home SP3 box: USB driver is correct USB device get recognized by its name (tested with a USB Printer, several USB Memory sticks, USB Wifi stick). but still WinXP does not match the driver with the device. USB Hardware works normally (tested with a live Ubuntu CD, everything works like a charm). I am sorry I do not know the reference of the mainboard. In windows' hardware manager: the USB Controller is installed correctly, all USB devices are listed by their names with a yellow (?) sign when plugged in. The computer is not mine, it is a friend's. She is an old lady, or else I would have already installed ubuntu on it. She is used to Windows. She told me that USB devices which were installed before the problem appeared still work on the computer. This would indicate that the problem is related to the first installation of a new device, not the use of it. I could not verify that. I think, the problem can be described as follows: USB devices have a "usual name" (user-defined in some cases, for example USB memory sticks), a type ID (a reference of the device type) and a device ID (individual identifyer). The type ID is used to match a device with a driver. Once the device is installed on the computer, it is recognized by the device ID. So I would say, the problem in my case is only that the type ID is not recognized correctly, but I do not exactly know how the USB implementation in windows works. With the printer: I tried installing it using the program from the manufacturer (canon). The program installs all drivers, and then tells me that the printer is not connected to the computer, though it is. I also tried the "manual installation": when connecting the printer, Windows tells me that a new device was connected (iP2000), and asks for a driver. When I indicate the correct location of the driver, windows tells me that it could not find any driver for the device. Drivers and program come from the original CD of the printer. I tried to remove all USB generic drivers from system32/drivers to force reinstall of all drivers from the cab archive. Windows did it without any problem, but the problem with USB is still there. I conclude on a problem on the USB controller driver. What can you advise? The next time I will have access to the computer, I will try reinstall all mainboard-specific drivers, and hope it has an effect. What else can I do? Syd from France |
