I'll bet Google knows. Do you have XP Pro? Use EFS. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est jetjock wrote: > Does anyone know of a shareware or free program that will password > protect a folder in XP? |

There are several, but you should start with: a) understanding what you want to protect, why, and from what; b) understanding what the protection actually does, and c) understanding what happens if you lose the keys. For example, you might think that using XP Pro you can protect a folder using EFS. This is sort of correct, but if anyone can get into your account, anyone can also read those protected files, so you have to have a good password, don't store it, change it regularly and don't allow automatic logins. And you must also - though this is wrongly left optional - export the account certificates so that if something goes wrong with your Windows install or profile, you can import the certificates and decrypt those files. Again, those certificates have to be safely stored and verified. If you don't do those things, you can permanently lose the data. A simple way to do this is to just zip the files and password-protect the zip file. However, you do want to know how easy it is to crack the passwords. HTH -pk |
