| Everything slow since SP3
I have Windows XP on my computer and had no end of trouble installing SP3 onto my computer until Wolfman pointed out a fix for AMD processors. A problem I discovered after that with random shutting down was that I have a Compaq Presario SR1560AN with an AMD Athion 64 Processor - not a laptop and so I had to rename one of my files because it was looking for a battery that didn't exist. It was around this time that I noticed that everything got slower. I can be waiting 18 seconds to load my IE homepage. I have done all the cleans etc and have not noticed any great difference. Some people are talking that SP3 has slowed their PC's down but others are not noticing any difference - could this be because of the difference in processors? (the same reason some people didn't experience problems with loading SP3 in the first place). I don't know a lot about computers so please keep your answers simple. Thanks anyone who can help. |

How much memory do you have installed on your computer? What cleaning have you done? Disc cleanup? Defrag? What is your HD size? Bear with me since i don't know a lot about computers. I have only used 27GB and still have 116GB free space. I recently installed Registry Easy and did a clean with that. Did all the usual cleans with general tab in properties along with a defrag. Did a clean with Mcafee. Plus did a major clean in safe mode with %temp% and temp files along with IE tools. |

perhaps, you should just uninstall it and return to the functionality you once had enjoyed. besides, there is nothing phenomenal in sp3; according to the white paper on it. also, your sp2 cd is no longer anygood on your sp3 pc, except for the recovery console. -- db·´¯`·...¸><)))º> DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces "pete71" <pete71.3i31fe@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:pete71.3i31fe@DoNotSpam.com... > > I have Windows XP on my computer and had no end of trouble installing > SP3 onto my computer until Wolfman pointed out a fix for AMD processors. > A problem I discovered after that with random shutting down was that I > have a Compaq Presario SR1560AN with an AMD Athion 64 Processor - not a > laptop and so I had to rename one of my files because it was looking for > a battery that didn't exist. Replies inline. Actually, that fix is for PCs with AMD processors *and* hard drive factory images that are designed for Intel processors. These are usually HP PCs. > A problem I discovered after that with random shutting down was that I > have a Compaq Presario SR1560AN with an AMD Athion 64 Processor - not > a > laptop and so I had to rename one of my files because it was looking > for > a battery that didn't exist. Which file was renamed? What is its new name? > It was around this time that I noticed that everything got slower. In that case if you undo the change(s), you should be back in business. > Some people are talking that SP3 has slowed their PC's down > but others are not noticing any difference - could this be because of > the difference in processors? Have a look at the following links for help and post back with any questions you might have: For those who have PCs with AMD processors and OEM images, especially HPs: "Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?" http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx (or http://tinyurl.com/6zs52d ) "Windows XP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation" http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx (or http://tinyurl.com/6nf4k4 ) "Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)" (Free Microsoft support for SP3-related issues) http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...3&gprid=522131 (or http://tinyurl.com/6cw2xk ) |
