Movie maker preview screen goes black after a few seconds of video

I'm using movie maker in Win XP.
After importing a vid, I am breaking it into pieces. Just click on the
imported vid and press play... but after a few seconds of normal
video, the preview screen goes totally black. Sound continues and the
video is continuing to "play" but the preview screen is black. If I
alt-tab switch to a different window that covers the preview screen,
then alt-tab back to moviemaker, I get a few more seconds of normal
video before it goes black again. Seems to be something to do with
screen refresh? Has anyone else had such a problem and found a fix?

You may have some incompatibility issues
with your source files. Have a look at the
following articles:

Re: Movie maker preview screen goes black after a few seconds of video

The file giving me problems is a wmv file that was *created* using
movie maker in the first place.

The video preview works fine for 3 or 4 seconds, then goes black. When
I force a screen redraw, such as by alt-tab switching to an
overlapping window and then back, it again plays fine for 3-4 seconds
before again going black. I can keep doing this... but it gets pretty
tedious.

OK...but maybe the original source
files had incompatibility issues.

Maybe it would be worth a try to go
to...Tools / Options / Compatibility tab
and uncheck all the filters.

And maybe the file is reaching the
resource limits of your system.

Maybe it would be worth a try to do
some maintenance. Empty your
Temporary Internet Files folder...
run Error Checking and Defrag...

Here's a link to a Google Groups
search into this newsgroup...maybe
you can find some info in there.

Re: Movie maker preview screen goes black after a few seconds of video

I had to reinstall movie maker to fix it. What a pain in the ass.
Apparently microsoft doesn't offer moviemaker as a standalone
download. I found the drill on the net: download XP SP2, unzip it,
find moviemk.inf, right click, install....

but it worked and all is OK now.

Already had done that with no benefit

Not likely

Do that routinely
