| Vista x64 and SUSE Linux
I have a new laptop with Vista Ultimate, 64-bit version. I want to make this a dual-boot machine by installing SUSE on its own partition. Also, I will use one of their two boot loaders. If I do this, as I did with my XP Pro laptop, does anyone know of any issue I should be aware of? Thanks in advance! Mike B. |

Vista does not boot in the same manner as does XP - I have not tried dual-booting Vista with Linux, there's no reason tothink it wouldn't work just as easily, but it will most likely not all work the way you'd expect. Personally, I think I would like to see it first on a test-bed installation using two separate physical HD's, before doing it to a laptop. Doing that, I would see if I couldn't install GRUB to the Linux HD and set up SUSE with a [ /boot ] partition and not touch the Windows prepared MBR at all. Tony. . . That was exactly my plan. My laptop has two physical drives (2 X 160gb). I'm less sanguine about this. I think you might need to let the boot loader be Vista. But by all means give it a try and let us know how it goes. I haven't tried it yet myself. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/xperts64 "Tony Sperling" <tony.sperling@dbREMOVEmail.dk> wrote in message news:uVYsBQqXHHA.984@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Vista does not boot in the same manner as does XP - I have not tried > dual-booting Vista with Linux, there's no reason tothink it wouldn't work > just as easily, but it will most likely not all work the way you'd expect. > Personally, I think I would like to see it first on a test-bed > installation > using two separate physical HD's, before doing it to a laptop. My recollection is that Grub recognizes Vista and everything works fine. I played with it during the Vista beta and RC1. |

Hi.. I have Vista Ultimate 64 with 2 300GB drives. I'm moving all the data from the second drive to "C" to clear space for RHEL4 and will attempt a dual-boot. I would actually prefer to use the Vista boot-loader; how do I do that? Thanks Ron "Charlie Russel - MVP" wrote: > I'm less sanguine about this. | Re: Vista x64 and SUSE Linux
I successfully installed SUSE Enterprise Desktop 10 on my HP laptop. I have two 160gb drives. The first drive (hd0) is my Vista partition....all of it. The second drive is ntfs except for 20gb that I reserved for SUSE. I used the Vista disk management to shrink the original 160bg partition by 20gb. During the install of SUSE I didn't touch anything but the 20gb, which SUSE created three partitions. One for swap space (2gb), a root partition (7gb), and a home partition (10.x gb). Grub is used as a boot loader. By default GRUB will not add a boot option for Windows Vista. I just completed the installation without worrying about this. After logging into SUSE desktop for the first time I used a root console login to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. I simply added: title "Windows Vista" root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 This is because Vista is loaded on the first partition of the first hard drive. That's it....no issues! With the exception of a minor issue with my sound card, all hardware was correctly recognized. I logged in to SUSE at work for the first time and the login sound was at full volume through the speakers even though I plugged in headphones. It doesn't seem to recognize that I have headphones. Even with mute selected in the SUSE O/S, login/logoff sounds are played at max volume. Ouch.... I quickly disabled system sounds. :) Mike "Mike Benton" <msnewsgroups@michaelbenton.com> wrote in message news:656E3A38-90D0-4B64-B579-A4483D3828CA@microsoft.com... >I have a new laptop with Vista Ultimate, 64-bit version. Congrat's - good to know that it was mostly un-surprising! As for the sound - not knowing what product you have, my HP zv5000 (something) was having trouble with XP x64 on grounds of driver issues concerning the proprietary multi-function keys and buttons for turning on WiFi, and the sound volume buttons didn't work. I installed Sabayon Linux (Gentoo) and it runs with excellence and some (a few) of those things actually work, or can be made to work - I don't really use most of it anyway. I am going to remove XP Home completely from it. I think you can put your sound to work o.k. without these functions - fire up the mixer utility and hard set the volume there - just like in Windows, you can have an Icon in the Taskbar to make adjustments.
