Applications Not Responding When trying to open or save file

I am running Windows 7 RC with all of the current updates.

I am using Office 2007, Expression Web 2, FrontPage 2003 and SharePoint
Designer 2007. These products also have all the latest updates installed.
Quite frequently, but not all of the time, when I try to open a file or when
I try to "Save As" from within one of these programs , the program does not
respond. I have to close the program down and restart it. If I chose a
file and double click on it, it opens in the correct program with no
problems.

I used the same computer with Windows 7 Beta 7000 and did not have this
problem like I am having it now. It may have occurred occasionally but not
frequently.

My hardware is :
ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Motherboard
Intel Core I7-920 2.66Ghz 8M LGA 1366 CPU
Two Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD's
6 Sticks of Corsair XMS3 2048 MB PC 12800 DDR3 1600 Mhz of Memory
Corsair 750 Watt Power Supply
Sony 20X DVDRW SATA
LG 6X Blu Ray HD DVD

I have my Bios Updated to the latest update and the Controller Mode is set
to IDE.

Any ideas on what could be causing these problems?

Thanks,
Lee Steele

Sorry, I failed to mention that Windows 7 RC is the 64 bit variety.

My first thought with anything like this is networking. What is your network
environment? USB network adapter? Wireless? Direct connection to a router?
Direct connection to a Cable or DSL modem?

Thanks Charlie,
I have a direct hardwired connection to my router using an onboard
Realtek RTL 8168 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC connecting to a Netgear
Wireleess N Gigabit WNR 3500 router.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I have another box using Windows Home
Server hardwire connected with a Intel Pro/1000 PM NIC and an Iomega Network
Hard drive hardwired connected.

Re: Applications Not Responding When trying to open or save file

OK, are you saving locally or to the WHS box? Or the Iomega hard drive?

I'm guessing that even if you're saving locally, the applications are trying
to enumerate your remote devices. These have gone "stale" and need to
refresh, and that takes time. I run into this periodically on my Win7 boxes,
and I strongly suspect it's related to WHS being on the network with mapped
drives to it. If I just wait patiently, or go work on something else, it all
sorts itself and I can do the save.

A quick way to test for this is to open a command window (or PowerShell, my
preference). Now, in that window, do a "dir" of the WHS and iomega mapped
drives. This will force them to wake up the connection. Now, try doing your
Save As from the application. If you've still got the problem, then we
haven't identified the source. But if you don't have the problem, then we've
clearly identified the cause and you can look at how to resolve it. One way
to resolve it is to use "offline files" for those locations. This will keep
a local cache of the location (or at least a part of it, depending on how
you configure it), which should allow that Save As to open quicker.

Re: Applications Not Responding When trying to open or save file

I do a Save locally and then a Save As to both the WHS and Iomega drives.
I have a mapped drive to both. I just opened the mapped drive and then
tried a Save As and did not have any problems. Thanks for the hint. I will
try opening the mapped drive each time before I do a Save As and see if it
solves the problem.

You said when you have that problem, you just wait and it sorts itself out.
I've waited several minutes and mine does not sort it self out.

Re: Applications Not Responding When trying to open or save file

Using Power Shell and doing a DIR command of both the Iomega and WHS mapped
drives did not solve the problem. I've done it several times over the last
couple of days and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Any more ideas??

Thanks,
Lee Steele
