| x64 server - x32 xp clients - users can't install printers
Hi We have a Win2k3SP2 x64 print sever with x64 and x86 HP universal drivers installed. When a user with elevated privilege installs a shared printer, they get a prompt that the driver is incompatable and have the option to look for the x86 one. When a normal user (no elevated priv) tries to add the shared printer they get an "access denied" but when they connect to the old x86 w2k3 print box they can add the printer because of GPO that allows them to add drivers. It appears this extra box prompting the user to look for the additional drivers is causing the issue. We have deployed the drivers locally thinking it would default to the x86 drivers but it has not made a difference. We don't want to give the users any more rights then they have because of staff turn overs but we are having to manually install printers for them because of this issue. Anyone know how to have the share default to the x86 print drivers (all HP Universal BTW.) |

Since the print server has the 32 and 64-bit drivers installed, the connecting client should get the correct driver. Have you added the additional architectures through the Server properties of the printer server from within the printers window? Personally I do not like the universal printer drivers, they just caused me headaches, I use the one for the model, which has always worked for me. BTW, what 64-bit O/S is the server? --- Stefan Pendl Windows Vista SP 1 AMD Turion X2 RM-70 2 GHz 4 GB RAM |

We tried adding the exact model of print drivers for each printer but we would get errors when trying to add the 32bit version, I don't remember specifically what it was but it stated it was incompatible so we ended up adding the Universal x64 and x86. We didn't add it from the server properties but from the printer's sharing tab>additional drivers. I agree the clients should add the x86 drivers but it defaults to the x64 and prompts that the correct driver is not installed, if you want to search, blah blah |

I will check, if I can add the 64-bit drivers when I am at work. I will see, if I can test your environment too. --- Stefan Pendl Windows Vista SP 1 AMD Turion X2 RM-70 2 GHz 4 GB RAM |
