Create new partition of existing C: drive Vista

I am having a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop that came pre-installed with Windows Vista. It is having 4 partitions as of now that is C, D and 2 ”primary” partitions that came preloaded with the laptop. Here are the complete details about the same:
    • C: 140GB
    • D: 9.77GB Recovery
    • Primary 39GB
    • Primary 2.5GB

Now the problem is I needed to make one more partitions where can I keep my data separate and safe. Hence I created an un allocated space from the C drive for 40GB. C drive is now of 99 GB. But when I try to assign the drive letter to the unallocated 40GB partition, I get the following error message:

“You cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions.”

Any help on the same ?

As I suggestion, I will like to tell you do not shrink system partition. You can create un allocated space from any other partitions but you should not do it from the system drive because it may corrupt the operating system or even some times result in hardware failure. Alternatively you can use any external drive for storing your data or pictures. Next time in future when you feel to format your laptop’s harddrive, make a 40Gb partition that time.

Thanks for the help and suggestions Janairo but I read somewhere that Microsoft has embedded a new feature in Vista, an inbuilt tool, to do hard drive partitioning and use the unused space under Computer Management console. I remember I used such feature in XP as well that worked fine for me. Than whats the problem in Vista ? I guess it is possible to use the un-allocated space from Computer Management console, isn’t it ?
