Overheating CPU causes Vista Desktop Window Manager (Dwm.exe) cras

Now that summer is starting over here in Australia, when I run heave duty
applications like video encoding my CPU tends to overheat a little. Around
60-65 Celcius range. And I have noticed that this causes Dwm.exe (Desktop
Window Manager) crash every 10 minutes or so continuously. The desktop
returns to normal but it shouldn't be like that. The error message is as
follows (irony as it maybe.. the error msg poped up as I was writing this
line =P)

I was wondering if there is any fix for this. I used to work on the 60-65C
temperature range during XP days and it didn't cause any problems. Since the
temperature doesn't always shoot up when I do normal work I have no intension
to install expensive coolers. Any ideas on what I can do guys?

Well, you already know what causes the problem - heat. And, you already have
stated that you do not want to invest in the proper solution - better CPU
cooling.

Guess you will have to live with the condition or air condition your
computer room.

Re: Overheating CPU causes Vista Desktop Window Manager (Dwm.exe)

hmmm..ok so this is def related to the heat then? i just wanted to confirm
cuz i can't decypher that error message and hex codes. just wanted a MS guy
who can read these to confirm my suspicions. ru saying vista can't operate at
that temp when xp can? cuz i think 60-65C is still an operable temperature..
and it never goes over.
i dunno it just didn't make sense to me how just one excutable could fail
when all other application are running just fine cuz the cpu is radiating a
bit of heat. does diff temperatures of the cpu affect different excutables in
different ways? i'm confused. thanks for the reply =)

Unless you use an external digital temperature meter, such as one made by
Fluke, you will never really know what your temps may be. These meters can
be calibrated between freezing and boiling. Everything in between will be
accurate.

I have found that the onboard temperature diodes can be off by up to +/- 20
degree C.

Re: Overheating CPU causes Vista Desktop Window Manager (Dwm.exe)

do you know the speed of the cpu fan? could be too slow.
should be at least 4800.
I had the same problem few months ago. I solved the problem with a faster
fan.

Also, take your HSF off and check for thermal material(small strip between
heatsink and cpu). If there is any,
remove it and replace it with generic thermal paste (electronic store or
Radio Shack if you have one.).
the thermal paste should be applied paper-thin. use a wide razorblade to
evenly spread the paste on the buttom surface of the heatsink.
Put your HSF back on and see what you get.
If your temps arent 40-50 C, get a Volcano 7 on Price Watch for $17.95. (if
it's the correct one for your cpu).
Make sure you remove the thermal material from the Volcano 7 and replace it
with thermal paste.

If you still arent seeing 40-50 C or at least under 60, your case geometry
is holding you back. if you can, take off the panel on the cpu side and
leave it open.
see what you get.
if it runs cooler, something is not right with your case cooling.
I always add a fan right behind the drive so it sucks the hot air from the
drive out of the case (not blowing in and over the drive).

hope that helps.

problem resolved:

i have amd x2 5000
oryginal vista bussines 32bit
and i rememer "aero was warking " on my pc
then i update hardware ( gf 8800gt bought )
reinstaled system and instaled MSi Live Update 3
then updeted bios ... everything
and suddenly after system bot i have this message and aero turned off all time

so i thought that is my new 8800gt fault.

NO after 1 day fighting i won.

that is BIOS Version problem ( in my case )
i have K9AG Neo2-Digital with v1.2 bios version ( wen i bought mainboard 1.5 were instaled i think )

Tomorrow i will instal v1.4 it is last working wersion without dwm.exe crash
( but 1big problem - before WIN start in BIOS i have message
PS2 mouse not found and i must press f1 to continue )

with v1.6 v1.7 BIOS this problem is fixed but i have Problem signature:
> Problem Event Name: APPCRASH ....

K9AG Neo2-Digital BIOS v1.5 - v1.7 <-- They cause DWM.exe APPCRASH

sry for lang. :P
