| Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit Ultimate on my new PC. The system specs are as follows; CPU: Intel Q6600 (Quad Core 2.4) MB: Intel DG965WH RAM: 4Gb (1Gb Transcend PC 800MHz x 4) Video: PNY 8800GTS In Vista 32-Bit, System runs well (Good CPU Utilization) but will not see all 4Gb RAM (3.2+GB Seen), system seems to be using a fair amount of RAM. Windows Experience score Rates the CPU at 5.9 In Vista 64-Bit Systetm runs significantly slower than the 32-Bit version. CPU Utilization near 50% with system at idle for all four cores. Running simple software pegs all four cores at 100%. System sees all four Gb and RAM utilization is better than in the 32-Bit. Windows Experience Score has dropped the CPU to 4.6. Two other IT people at work with similar system specs have the same problem in 64-Bit Vista. Anyone getting good results running 64-Bit Vista on an Intel Quad-core? ajf |

| Re: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit
FIRST you need to learn to ignore the ram usage in Vista. Is is different than any OS before it. The more free ram you have means that Vista is not doing its job correctly. Ram is MUCH faster than harddrive speeds, therefore Vista is making use of the fast stuff and leaving the slower drives for XP. Second 32 bit systems have trouble with more than 3 gig of ram, just the way it is. Same system, 32 bit versus 64 bit, 32 bit has issues. |

Yes, but the 64-bit is so slow, that I can't even use Windows Explorer effectivly. 32-Bit works like it should. Also, why would my "Winodws Experience score" drop from 5.9 to 4.6 when switching from 32 to 64-Bit. |

| RE: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit
Update to problem. While searching the internet, I found that this is a common problem with the Q6600 processor and more than 4gb of RAM. I removed two sticks of RAM and the speed improved (Even the Windows Experience CPU score was back up to 5.9). I then added two additional 512 Sticks to make a total of 3Gb and fill all four RAM slots. System is still working like it should. So, it looks like Vista-64 Ultiimate has problems on computers with the Q6600 and 4GB of RAM. ajf |

Well, I don't think it's due to your processor, however I do think it is either the board or vista. I as well have an intel dg965wh board with 4GB of OCZ DDR2 800MHZ RAM. Running in 32bit vista Business Edition, It was perfect, though it only registered 3.2GB of RAM due to it being a 32bit OS. I Loaded in a 64bit version and my CPU usage went off the charts, until I took out 2GB of RAM and since then it's been working perfectly. |

| Re: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit
I found other forums where people had the same problems with the Q6600, 4GB RAM and most had the nVidia 8800 GTS/GTX. It was happening with Asus, MSI and Intel boards. For some, downgrading the Bios a few versions to where the user had more control over the "memory hole" area for the video card corrected the problem. I will update the post with more URLs to the other forums when I get back to work (I placed them in my favorites at the office) |

| Re: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit I just built a system with a Q6600. I've got an Asus P5W DH Deluxe board and 4 GB of RAM. I'm not having any speed issues so far. The CPU is scoring 5.9 - and the RAM 5.5. The system is still initializing the Raid volumes that I built with the ICH7 Southbridge (having a Raid 5 volume and a Raid 1 volume on a desktop is going to be nice). The one catch I had when I started out was that the motherboard only registered 3.2 GB of RAM as available until I went in and changed an option to allow a 64 bit OS to see the entire RAM amount. That might be a spot to look for in your BIOS if you're having issues with speed and 4 GB of RAM. Bamf -- bamf |

Hello: Does q6600 work with windows xp 64? Is this processor compatible with it? I have a q6600, board d975xbx2, 4Gb ram 667, sapphire ati x1550 512 mb. What os should I use? Please, help me. I work with music, graphic design and video. I still have some questions. Maybe you can help me again. Does Vista recognize all 4 Gb memory? Does it work with photoshop cs3, coreldraw x4, finale, adobe audition cs3, macromedia suite, and software like this? |

I have the same processor ..same board same amount of ram and 3 ATI 3870s, I have been running Vista business for well over a year ,,system is screaming fast and rock solid !! great motherboard and processor combo !! I know that Vista 64 will recognize all that memory and more...Your motherboard supports 8 gigs of memory so yes you are good there...I would assume it will work with all those programs as well but to be certain I would definitely check there respective websites.. Also possible peruse there forums for any possible bugs that there might be and ways you can get around any you might have... Sorry I was probably not all the help you need.. I wish you best of luck .. Enjoy that system as I have greatly enjoyed mine !! I have a Q6600, IP35-E, 8800GT-1GB and 6GB of ram, vista runs well on my config. pretty sure its a driver/bios problem like what the others have said earlier, is your installer from MS or a downloaded copy ? -- EarlZ |

| Re: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit
Hi, 2GB of ram is fine for x64 though the chief reason many use for installing it is to use more than 4GB. How much you should have depends largely on your use of the system. Gamers frequently find 4GB to be a sweet spot, and users of autocad and video editing software can often take advantage of more. Keep in mind though that memory at addresses above the 4GB mark cannot be used by 32 bit applications, so unless yours are designed to take advantage of x64 there's not much point to installing more than that amount. That said, wait until after you install x64 to add the additional memory (and it's a clean install, there is no upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit). The reason being that there is a timing issue when all 4 ram slots are in use during an x64 setup (it's not the amount of ram, but rather the number of installed sticks that is the problem). Once installed, the timing is no longer a problem. |

I have the Q6600 and didn't even realise it was 64bit! however now i know i want to upgrade, preferably doing a dual boot so i can keep my 32 bit version "in case". however i read here that a full and clean install is required. do you think there would be any issues? I have a P5N-e SLI motherboard with 4GB RAM and 2x 8600GS |

| Re: Speed problem with Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) and Ultimate 64-Bit Systemax N2000 Gaming PC - Intel Core2 Quad Q6600-G0 stepping OC'd to 3 ghz / genuine Windows Vista Home Premium X64 / NVIDIA nForce 680iLT SLI / 8GB DDR2-800 PC6400 / 250GB SATA / DVDRW / Dual NVIDIA 8600GT 512MB in SLI mode / Gigabit LAN / 600W / 24 inch SCEPTER monitor (1920 x 1200) as this allows true dual view (thinking about a second Scepter monitor and dual BFG GeForce 9800 GT - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, HDTV, VGA Support in SLI mode. This system runs clean quiet and very fast.(Crysis has no issues and Portals whiles away the hours) The only issue at this time is a true 64 bit browser (minefield comes to mind ) but no x64 bit flash player supported yet....so we muck along in the mud when we could be flying...All hail the great ADOBE corporation for the stellar x64 bit support. Ram is rarely high and cpu's rarely exceed 50% utilization while core temps average 45C-55C under average loads (I will be going to liquid cooling soom) Please browse a book called "OVERCLOCKING YOUR CPU TO THE EXTREME" and find out if you have the Go stepping on you processor (It makes a difference so you don't overclock your ram if you don't want to (Tweek each device separately recommended) Good luck with this issue. There is no issue created by MAN that can't be corrected ty users working to gether. The only looser is the person who will not try. In answer to the origional post Vista x64 with 4+ gb ram is very well behaived with just a little work. -- bobtran |
