second issue.

Hi,

Right click the drive in Windows Explorer, choose properties. On the tools
tab, you will find error checking. This is the tool you need to run.

Thanks for the reply. Where do I find Windows Explorer? I tried the "e" but
no luck.

Windows Key+E is the simplest way. Type it into the start/search prompt for
another.

The windows explorer on my computer keeps coming up blank. i can't
access the files directly the only way is by using nero. Can anyone
help??? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!:cry::cry::cry:

Re: Corrupt files - chkdsk utility

Hello Rick.

Check your hard disk for errors

You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of
your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

Click to open Computer.

Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click
Properties.

Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If
you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan
detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk
check will simply report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of
bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the
hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically
fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Click Start.

Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes.
For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's
checking for errors.

Note
If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use
(for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted you to
reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

Re: Corrupt files - chkdsk utility

I had the same problem. The message kept telling me to do a chkdsk, but
It would not work.
I was told to do a reinstall with the Vista OS CD, but one of the
options on the way to the reinstall was to do a Vista Upgrade which I
did.

It goes through a fairly long process on its own for about an hour.
Then it states that their are corrupt files, so I clicked OK on all of
them and let it proceed.

All of the sudden it did it's own chkdsk and cleaned all the corrupt
files. No files were lost and I am back to normal.

I believe this all was caused when I did a hard crash because I left
the computer on while it was using the batteries(I went to cut the
grass). The battery ran out and hard crashed the computer.

I also do not know much about computers.

When I try to run the check for the C drive it says it can't because
the C drive is running. So it tells me it can do it when it restarts
and it doesn't. I am completly lost, can anyknow please reply back
about this?

You could also try running sfc /scannow at the command prompt.

- Find your command prompt in the start menu, usually under
Accessories.
- Right click it and select "Run as Administrator."
- At the command prompt type:sfc /scannow

Press enter and let it do its job.

I'm not sure this is where I post my problem but here goes.
When I run chkdik at the Dos prompt it asks if I want to run and
correct errors on th disk at the next startup. I type y ,restart the
computer but it doesn't run, it just restarts. Any suggestions?

-I tried the above procedure...It says "Windows resource Protection
found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". What can i do
to get rid of these files?

Re: Corrupt files - chkdsk utility

Hi, Engel. Pardon me if I butt in. I read your response to Swattig's
post, and I went and did an Automatically fix file system errors as well
as Scan on my D: drive ( local drive ). After that I tried to do the
same on my OS (C) drive, and as you said, I was asked if I want to do
that next time I start the computer. So, I clicked the box "Schedule
disc check", shut down the computer, re-start. I didn't see anything
happening on the screen, so I opened the C drive and tried the Auto fix
and Scan. I was asked the same question again. I was back to square 1.
What did I miss ??
Please explain and thank you.

My laptop doesn't get to any major screen (black) after turning onp;
only a few error wondows for true type fonts and a small window stating
to run chkdsk utility. The problem is that it will not start any
programs, can't see the desktop, have no menu or access to one. The
computer isn't "running", so how can I get this to work.
A feww times on start up it does a check of the drives, but always
stops.

Can I copy checkdisk to dvd/cd from a desktop and somehow run it on the
laptop?

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete then choose Task Manager then click File menu -
New Task (Run).

In Run try typing

chkdsk c: /r

and

sfc /scannow

I've tried to run chkdsk but I keep getting a message that says that it can't run it while the drive is being used. then I tried running sfc/sannow using the command prompt but it didn't fix all the files. what do I do now? My notebook didn't come with a system restore disc. I just want to reformat my drive. I have everything backed up on an external. WHAT DO I DO!!!??? Oh and I keep getting that blue screen of death.

it's an asus g50. Everytime I call tech support I get put on hold for an hour!

THank you! Helped out a lot. Yay no more corrupted files. thank God for external hard drives

What brand is your notebook?

I'll see if I can find the instructions on how to restore you computer
back to factory defaults from your computer manufacturer's website to
help.

This means you're having problems with the hard drive. It's gone bad and
you need to replace it. Take it to a shop and have them replace the hard
drive and reinstall Windows for you. Unless you think you can do it on your
own or you want to do it on your own with some help from the newsgroup.

While restarting the notebook, tap F8 every other second until you
hopefully can still enter the recovery management screen. From there
just follow the on screen instructions to do a factory restore.
