| Vista update messed up my machine I installed a "critical update" to my Windows Ultimate 64 bit (with SP2 already installed a few days ago) this morning and restarted my computer at the end of the install process. However, after the initial Windows bar in the middle bottom of the screen, all I end up is the cursor with a blue circle next to it. Though I can move the cursor, the rest of the screen is black. I have booting up in Safe Mode, the only difference in the result is a larger cursor arrow and a larger blue circle. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks -- ramaksur |

Hi, Did you allow for sufficient time for the installation to complete? Hit ctrl+shift+escape, does Task Manager show up? If so, on the applications tab click new task and enter explorer.exe. See if this starts the Windows shell. If all else fails, hit F8 at boot and choose either the last known good configuration or safe mode with command prompt and run rstrui.exe to open system restore. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org Vote for my shoe: http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "ramaksur" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:e9497b1221b2628b107ed57041877631@nntp-gateway.com... > > I installed a "critical update" to my Windows Ultimate 64 bit (with SP2 > already installed a few days ago) this morning and restarted my computer > at the end of the install process. Try booting into safe mode and see if there is an option to restore "last known good" or system restore using the restore point made just before the fix was installed. I recommend having an external USB drive and a backup imaging program. Windows is so complex now it's not so easy to pop in a boot disc and fix it. Anything you can't fix with a restore point your pretty much have to lay a saved image back on unless you're a systems configuration guy with lots of tools. Macrium Reflect just updated their free version to 4.2. You can try it for disaster recovery once you get back on the air. -- MilesAhead "I don't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." - Groucho Marx |
