| Vista and IE 8 DEP Problems
I have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work. |

.. You should be able to access Internet Options for IE in the control panel. In the advanced section there is an entry that say "turn on memory protection to mitigate online attacks". If it's ON turn it OFF. You can also access general DEP settings in Advances System Properties. |

The interesting thing is when I go to the memory protection, the box is checked, the text is light, and it won't let me uncheck the box to turn it off. Also, when I go under advanced system properties to change the DEP settings, the DEP circle has a blue dot in it and it won't let me just remove it. If I click on the other circle to turn on for all programs except... then I have to pick out which to turn off. Do I just turn them all off? Another site suggested turning off the add-ons, well I checked and those are already turned off. My brother, who fixes stuff like this, and unfortunately does not live near me anymore, said I should save what I want to save and reload the OS, by that I'm guessing he means the Vista. And, that's just too much for my noncomputer brain. It would be nice to at least get IE 8 so I can use it. Until then, if ever, I''ll just keep chugging along with the other server. |

Try booting into SAFE mode. Then use the "Run As Admin" command to start IE8. If it will stay open go to tools/internet options/advanced. You should be able to uncheck the memory protection option. Regarding DEP in general, if you turn it ON for all programs you can then add Internet Explorer as an exception. |

I am not going to go through all that to use ie8. If they make it friendly enough, I'll download it again; otherwise I'll leave it alone. When I was in the Air Force with a top-secret clearance, I used to joke that my job was so secret even I didn't know what I was doing. Now microsoft has one-upped me. They have enhanced security to the point where their own programs won't run. |
