Re: Help! Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing.

I am having a problem similar to yours. The only difference is that
there is no error message. IE simply stops responding and I must
restart. Big hassle since I must use multiple tabs for work and clients
are always in a hurry. This is irritaing. And I am NOT going to get IE8
nightmare until that dust has settled.

Re: Help! Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing.

I am not a techie, but what I did worked for me. I had the same problem
fro 5 months. Make sure you back up your hard drive before attempting
this. First, I did an Install Upgrade of Vista - simply put your OS dvd
in the drive and run Setup, then choose Install, then choose Upgrade.
This will allow you to install Windows Vista without loosing your
existing data on you r hard drive. That will take about 2 hours. Then
after finished answere a few questions and choose the first option
(Recommended Settings). Now that will not solve the problem yet, but
you still have not downloaded your updates. Let your computer run and
install about 84 updates that you erased during the upgrade install.
You will have to shut down your computer for the updates to be
installed, but before you do that, run a Hijack This scan and have it
fix everything except what you are completely sure is not infected.
Don't fix your primary antivirus software like AVAST, or anything from
Microsoft or Dell, HP. I fixed about 95% of everything on the scan.
Then delete them. Then I shut down the computer and let the computer
install 84 updates during shutdown. Now, when that is finished, turn
your computer back on and you should not get the Windows Explorer
shutdown any more. There are exact instructions for doing the Windows
install upgrade, because if you choose to do a regular install, it will
reformat your disk and you will lose everything. So find those
instructions and follow them, for doing an Vista Install Upgrade. Good
Luck, it worked for me.

Re: Help! Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing.

My x64 Vista version had the same type of problem and I never found out
why, so I changed to the x86. Explorer.exe (not IE) would shut down and
restart several times an hour. Many folks have had this problem but I
have not seen a solution.

Re: Help! Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing.

I found my problem was a corrupted video file. I think Windows will choke
on anything corrupted files it's trying to make thumbnails of. Then there
is also Bluetooth. SP2 has improved Bluetooth a bit, but Broadcom's WIDCOMM
6.1 driver/software will cause Windows Explorer to stop working and restart
anytime I open it. I had to remove the Bluetooth dongle out of the USB port
and uninstalled the WIDCOMM 6.1 software for the time being.
