Ethernet connection between Vista/XP

I just got a new laptop that is running Vista Home Premium 32bit. I have
an old desktop that is running XP Service Pack 2.

I want to move some files off of the desktop onto my laptop using an
Ethernet cable, which I already have.

I don't want to use wireless and I don't intend to connect the two to
the Internet. I just want to move files.

Can someone please explain to me how I can set up a network between the
two of them?

Thanks.

Re: Ethernet connection between Vista/XP

You can use a cross over cable between two computers. If they are
capable of 1 Gbps, get a CAT 6 cross over. Cross over cable is not a
patch cable. You can use a router and patch cables.

Same workgroup for both computers
Same user account on both computers with same password
Same subnet

192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 using 255.255.255.0. If you are using a
cross over cable, the gateway is same address. If a router, its the
router's address.

You need to set up a share in Windows for each drive you want to see.
Use the account above for rights.

Disable firewall and anti-virus. My Network Places can see the other
computer. Just copy and paste. Don't move. Takes longer and you can't
compare file count and size at the end.

You can google workgroup networking or home networking. Many sites have
step by step directions.
