Can't access computer on home network through ip address

I have set-up a home network with Vista and connected all computers through a
linksys router. File sharing and folder access works, but I can't access the
computer within the network through their ip address. I enabled the telnet
server and client on all computer and I am also not able to open a telnet
session using the ip address.

What am I doing wrong any idea?

Can you ping each other by IP? By default, you should be able to ping if you
have enabled file sharing.

Re: Can't access computer on home network through ip address

Thanks that helped a lot. The program I am using needed a specific port and
this was not open on the host and remote computer. I added the port in the
windows firewall and now everything is working fine.

Thanks for the suggestion - it helped me to rule out one problem.
