Can't connect to Internet when mapped drives are present

I have a Dell laptop running Vista that connects by wireless to a Belkin DSL
Modem Router. I have just purchased a Buffalo Linkstation Live NAS drive to
store my music and other files on and have connected it directly to the
router. The laptop can see the NAS drive and the files on it no problem. The
trouble comes when I map a network drive to the Linkstation. As soon as I do
this IE 7 refuses to connect to the internet. I just get a white screen and
eventually the message that IE has stopped responding. Disconnect the mapped
drive and it works fine. i need the mapped drive to enale I-tunes to connect
to the music stored on the Linkstation. I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Chris

I have no problem with a similar system using a Linksys DSL router and a
Western Digital drive.
Have you tried setting up the Network Drive after you are already connected
to the Internet with IE7?

Re: Can't connect to Internet when mapped drives are present

Hi JW

I tried your suggestion and unfortunately it didn't work. However I found a
support article on the Buffalo website that dealt with a similar problem
relating to mapped drives. It suggested going into the properties of the
"Clients for Microsoft Networks" on the relevant network adaptor and ensuring
that the RPC Service pointed to Windows Locator. Apparently under Vista this
is blank by default and can cause mapped drives to fail. When I checked on my
machine, sure enough, the RPC Service field was blank and after I set it to
Windows Locator everything seems to work OK. I have yet to test it thoroughly
but I am optimistic.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my post and for
suggesting a solution to the problem. It's good to know there are people like
you out there.

Regards

Chris
